Elizabeth (Betsy). Twenty-two, almost twenty-three, but perpetually seventeen. Whirls back & forth between vulgarity & delicacies like a dervish proper & has been known to disappear for months on end. Worshipper of Carroll, devotee of Lovecraft & BPAL hoarder absolute. Destined for the madhouse.

Date: 2009-06-27 08:24 am (UTC)Agreed - with Nine she was a bit more like Ace, only she stood up to Nine more & didn't let him stop her from doing what she really wanted & she wasn't afraid to sass him if she felt like it. But with Ten, her relationship sort of dissolved into this soppy romance thing, with a lot less of the spark it had when he was Nine. (& honestly, I've always been kind of pissed off at her for how rude & condescending she was to Sarah Jane in School Reunion - I love that episode because if I hadn't seen it, we wouldn't BE having this talk right now, but I've always hated Rose's behaviour in it. In some places I feel like MAYBE she had a right to be a little angry, but she didn't need to be an out & out bitch to Sarah - I mean, she's travelled with the Doctor too - have some respect!
(& a sidebar to that episode: I HATED Sarah Jane calling the Doctor's new companion 'his new assistant' - I think it was kind of out-of-character for her. She'd have spoke up if someone called her that back when SHE was a companion, so why would she call Rose that? & she KNOWS that travelling with the Doctor doesn't make someone an 'assistant' - she travelled with TWO of him & met his fifth regeneration! She'd know better, wouldn't she?)
Tooth and Claw was the biggest example of it; apart from my squeeing over the Jamie thing and seeing Pauline Collins return to Who 39 years after The Faceless Ones, that episode was cringe-worthy, and the behaviour of Ten and Rose was the most annoying of it all. I was as outraged as the queen. (Of course, part of my brain was also thinking that her outrage was because he was calling himself "James McCrimmon", and I kept expecting her to say "I've snogged James McCrimmon, and you don't look anything like him!")
Hmm. Back when I was all about the new series (I'm so divorced from it now, I'm not even bothering to watch the specials, I'm just waiting for Eleven to show up & be AWESOME), Tooth and Claw was a favourite episode of mine. I haven't watched it in so long, so forgive my ignorance, but how DID Ten & Rose behave that bothered you so? Honestlt, all I remember is the library scenes, me not liking Queen Victoria, the werewolf & later on, learning that the name Ten used was that of a former companion.
(& WHOA, WHOA, WAIT A MINUTE - THAT WAS PAULINE COLLINS AS QUEEN VICTORIA? I had NO idea! She was great in the role & I loved her at the end -
Samthe Queen created Torchwood! & I bet Jamie's a FAR better snogger than Ten could EVER be. ::giggles:: Between Ten & Jamie? JAMIE, ALL THE WAY. ^_^)Me neither - but one of my problems with the "Eleven/Rose" captions on Sally Lockhart caps is that in that one Billie plays the main character and Matt Smith is the companion - just like RTD would surely prefer it to be. *rolls eyes*
It reminds me of something Colin Baker says in the audio commentaries from Trial of a Time Lord: "If the show had began with the new series, you could have called it Rose instead of Doctor Who and nobody would have flinched." Can't say I fully agree with it, but I can see RTD relishing on the thought...
I feel like I owe Colin a high-five for that . . . & wait, HE was HER companion? ::sighs:: Okay, now I really can see why people hate Rose so much. (also, he was in an episode of Secret Diary of A Call Girl as - you guessed it - someone Belle sleeps with, but he isn't a client of hers, just a one night stand.)
