She would have, yes. My recent purchase of the Trial of a Time Lord box set has shown me once again how wonderfully she would have worked, had Six remained in the show for a while longer. Sadly, the sacking of Colin Baker had removed the chance of her having a proper introduction story (her Trial adventure is set in the Doctor's future, which is watched during the trial as evidence, and shows them after they had been travelling together for some time), something that only recently with Big Finish was possible to fix. A lot of people dislike her because of the absense of said proper introduction onscreen, though many also object to the sharpness of her scream. However, there's a large group who at the time objected to her as a companion because Bonnie Langford was already a household name at the time, and the type of characters she was known to play made people dislike the thought of her aboard the TARDIS - kinda like if they had announced Larry Linville as a companion after he played Frank Burns in M*A*S*H, if we are to make a comparison.

Yes, they probably wouldn't share the same style, but they might be good friends. :D
She'd probably get along well with Zoe as well - after all, Mel has a photographic memory, and Zoe would respect that.
