Here's a (hopefully) not-too-spoilery explanation: in that serial, some people seem to recognize Seven from somewhere, even though he has never met them before, and call him by a completely different name. When he says they're probably mistaken, they reply with a "You might have changed your face, but I'd recognize you anywhere!"
A big part of fandom likes to believe these adventures the Doctor had under an alias will take place in the new series, but I doubt it. Personally, I believe that these adventures took place before the new series, and that therefore the future regeneration of the Doctor who lived through them was Eight. The identity he assumed would have fit him perfectly, I think.
Hmm - no, not that spoilery at all! & with Eight's occasional memory loss, he could have been that particular Doctor & not known it when he was.
Oh, I know Firefly. I saw half of it, but gave up halfway because on that same time another channel started to air weekly mini-marathons of M*A*S*H (5 episodes in a row) and that was my main priority.
O, hooray! I had a feeling you might know of it, actually - somehow. Hee! Well, anyway, River is my absolute favourite for many reasons & once upon a time, I attempted to write a crossover with her as a companion of Ten's, between Rose & Martha's times as his companions. It was a three-story thing, one being a fanmix with fic attatched, but it was never completed & as you might imagine, is now completely abandoned. But not the idea of River as a companion to A Doctor, of course. Just not Ten.
(& I had a River/Simm!Master story in the works, but it's in limbo really, now, since it was sort of connected to the other one.)
She'd prefer Fabulous Socks instead, but I'll go for Crazt Socks. :P

Well, I did a lot of research when I wrote them. I just hope it worked. With the Rutans, however, since I never saw their so far only serial, I was forced to take some liberties.
I'm sure everything will work out fine in the end. ♥ & I haven't even HEARD of the Rutans, so I won't know at all if they're not right or such. :D
