Okay! So rambly, fangirly post time now!
But before I do? I just want to say that diamond microdermabrasion treatment? Is awesome! Now I get why people who do it spend the money on it. It makes a bird look pretty nice!
OKAY, SO, WHAT ABOUT DEAD LIKE ME THEN?
Well, I could say (& will) lots of things, but I have to say that one reason I finished series two so fast was because one of my DVDs in it wasn't working! Even after I cleaned it & even after I tried it in River's DVD drive. So I've missed out on three or four actual episodes in series two, but I don't think they were anything overly important. (um, except for the fact the Roxy & Mason were going reaping in Cancun! HELLO, MASON IN CANCUN? & I'M DENIED THIS? NO MA'AM.)
But other than that, I absolutely adored watching both series of it. I really did enjoy series two, but series one was kind of my favourite of the two, I think. I can't say why, but I just felt like it had more emotional weight behind it. But that isn't to say that series two didn't! At least for Mason & Daisy - OMGOMGOMG MASON/DAISY YAAAY. Now I may be a bit biased toward these two, as my first episodes of Dead Like Me were from series two & were, if I remember right, my first episode was actually when George more or less gate-crashes a funeral with Mason so she can meet the guy she has a crush on & who's father she reaped. (I remember this because as soon as I saw Mason being, well, Mason, I flipped the fuck out & squeaked out, 'O MY FUCKING GOD, IT'S FITZ KREINER ON MY TELEVISION! He was - no, IS in general - so Fitz-esque! Um, more on this later.) Then I went up to Last Call before I got series one, so hence my fondness for Mason/Daisy. But after series one, I was still squealing over them - SHE POURS A WHOLE GLASS OF COKE DOWN MASON'S SHIRT WHEN THEY FIRST MEET! THEY GET DRUNK & DANCE TOGETHER! HE GIVES HER A RING! ::flails on & on::
So yes, I ship Mason/Daisy like MAD. Just - they make me wibble. & I love how their relationship, even if it's of the non-romantic kind, develops in series two. & them dancing together at Rube's place is hysterical! Not just because they're so cute (& occasionally angsty) when plastered, but because they were plastered in Post-It notes! ::dies:: AWESOME, AWESOME SHIT, MAN.
& I may or may not have been thinking 'OMG MASON, JUST KISS HER ALREADY. SOMEONE, PLEASE MAKE THE FIRST MOVE, CHRIST!'
So, that was me fangirling Mason/Daisy, now we'll move onto how much I adore Daisy herself! & I really do, even though I really found her a bit grating on the nerves in her first few episodes - I kept wanting to slap her a few times & tell her to shut the fuck up because she was so annoying. But after her little seance scheme, I came to nod my head & be like, 'Yeah, that's the Daisy Adair I know and love.'
& HOW AWESOME IS HER WARDROBE? Well, not as awesome as Mason's, but hers contains a fair few covet-worthy items, like her Asian silk pyjama set & the top she wears in Last Call, I think. Also, her tan coat with the huge furry collar - it's very thirties, very glamorous, & of course, fabulously Daisy! She has a lot of glamour, like Betty had. & I liked Betty too! She was a twenties girl! & still dressed like it in some of her episodes! Flappers FTW! (but I always found Betty a bit creepier than Daisy ever was - it was her thing with the pictures, I think. I just found it weird & creepy.)
Also? I kind of see a lot of myself in Daisy - her outward bubbliness, the things she would rather hide under the bubbliness, the fact that we're both fallen starlets . . . well, I'm a fallen stage actress, actually. & I never slept with half of show business, like Daisy claims to have. ::giggles:: So maybe that's why I ♥ her as much as I do.But it doesn't explain my sudden crush on her. Hmm.
Okay, that was Daisy. Actually, I should have talked about her second, because she's easily my second favourite - but my first favourite would have to be, hands-down,very little no contest, Mason. I mean . . . HE JUST EXUDES AWESOME, OKAY? In any state, really - drunk, high, sober, angsty, when committing various acts of criminal activity, stealing candy from children with the best question EVER . . . yeah, that could be the short version of why I love Mason. (& yet, even though I love him to bits, I just about DIED when Roxy mowed him down while he was trying to rip off parking meters! & I still loved Roxy after that, so no damage was done, apparently.)
BUT I WANT TO FANGIRL MORE, OKAY? Starting with about ninety percent of his wardrobe, I'd say. After Daisy & George, he had the FUCKING BEST CLOTHES. Like, I'd just steal his entire wardrobe for myself, really. He, along with Daisy & George, are totally my newest fashion inspirations-idols, most definitely. I'm also oddly fond of his customised blazer with the hooded jacket look - it might look odd on some people, but he wears it well! & of course, his double-layering look, which I already nicked - for me, a grey sweater under an Emily the Strange top with blue jeans & Converse - practical & quite stylish! But the plaid trousers? Not so much. Um, yeah. Too golf-like for me.
Okay, moving from the sartorial to the . . . well, onto other things, I still maintain, AND I SWEAR, THIS IS NOT BECAUSE OF HALF MY FRIENDS WERE SAYING THIS LONG BEFORE I GOT HERE, that Mason is so Fitz-esque that it's scary. I mean, it's net even because Callum Blue = perfect Fitz, but because, well - if you know Fitz, then look at Mason, it kind of makes you think (or makes ME think, anyway), 'Hey . . . Mason's really got a lot in common with Fitz, doesn't he?' (& I want to point out that this would also be in both physicality & personality ways. Not just one or the other!)
& also, it's kind of the same case of why I also like Daisy - well, you all know me by now; my favourite characters are always the ones I relate to the most - minus the drugs, the booze, the drugs & booze & the selling/smuggling of them to & in various places, I can relate a bit to Mason, in that I'm a classic fuck-up myself, but I'm just a sober one. I'm the one who could be counted on to royally fuck something up & usually will, BUT! I try not to, even if I'm not always good at it.
That & the fact that I'm a sixties bird at heart. & yes, I'd read books I haven't read yet in order to up the chances of a shag with a cute Lit student. (but I'd also enjoy reading them as well!)
Uh, short version? I FUCKING LOVE MASON. HE HAPPENS TO BE MADE OF AWESOME FOR SO MANY REASONS. THERE.
(O, & I forgot to mention, he banged Kaylee Frye's Goth ancestor in the back of a record shop. HELL. FUCKING. YES.)
Wow, this is getting long, so let's skip to my third favourite - miss George Lass. What can I say about George, hmm . . . well, she had quite a memorable death in comparison to her group of reapers, I love how cynical & bitchy she is, & the weird thing? There are some moments where she reminds me of Neil Gaiman's Death, but without the chipper attitude & the Byron-esque brother. In series two, after she settles into her role as a reaper, she just seems so Death-esque in some ways - like, this is her job & she just does it. Nothing special, it's what she does now. She'll take your soul & lead you to your light, but she's not sentimental about it (usually), but just calm, casual & practical. This is her job, she gets an assignment & she does it. That's that. & among other things, I think it's why I like her so much. Death's always been one of my favourites & George is just a kind of cynical, snarky version of her, but with loads more colour in her fab wardrobe.
& George is the second of my three favourites that I see the most of myself in - I don't act like it, but I can be just as cynical & a bitch as George can be at times. Also, we both kind of fucked off with the whole school nonsense & now work, more or less. (well, I don't yet. But if I land a receptionist job in a salon, I'll basically be what I termed a 'beauty temp'. Which could be kind of glamorous, but heh, I have a feeling it isn't. ::laughs::) But either way, George has a direction in her life, even as she's a reaper. & now, so do I, even though I'm a class-A fuck-up who couldn't bear the idea of any more actual schooling.
Well, that & I went to school with a hell of a lot of people who were just like Mason, only a) nowhere near as sexy & b) weren't British. Ah, fucksocks.
& honourable mentions, i.e., I really don't think there were very many, if any, characters that I DIDN'T like in some way: Betty (flapper-reaper-glamour girl! Happy thoughts!), Roxy (O.M.G. I really love her, even though cops kind of scare me. But Roxy's a total riot & I love how much of an attitude she has. & she could TOTALLY rock a princess dress! O yeah, & she shot Mason under the table. & said George ought to have a hot cup of shut the fuck up. LOVE. & even as a meter maid, she was badass! CAN'T DENY THAT, RIGHT?) & of course, Rube. (o, dude. The last two episodes of series two totally broke my heart for him. & I loved his early interactions with George - like she was his daughter, in a way. He even called her by his daughter's nickname - Peanut. It's funny - I didn't know if I'd like him all that much, because we don't get to know as much about him as we do the others, but I think that might be part of why I liked him. He was mysterious, yet very much paternal at the same time. I think he was a good person for George to have around as she got into her job of being a reaper. If she'd only had Mason & Betty, she might have come out a lot differently, I think.)
For my last fangirly note, I have to say, the ending of the final episode? IT WAS FUCKING BEAUTIFUL & I DID INDEED GET A BIT MISTY-EYED. George's last words were lovely & I love how she let her little sister see her after death. I almost cried. It was just a lovely scene & very touching, I thought. George's last words are kind of stuck in my head, actually. Garbled a bit, mixed-up, since my memory's not always good after one viewing, but they're there. & I just keep thinking of them. They were lovely. ♥
(& shut up, this icon is totally applicable. & will have to do until I get some actual Mason icons! ::beams::)

Date: 2009-09-18 11:46 am (UTC)As for the Mason/Fitz comparison, I (obviously) think he's similar enough to use as a representation, but they're far from the same person. I think the main difference (apart from Fitz not having a history of crime and drug use) is that Mason is up for living life when the chances come his way, but Fitz has a yearning for adventure and wants to learn more about the world around him. They're both utterly charming, fumbling, messed up blokes, but Fitz wins the contest, I think ;)
And George is me, minus the geekiness, so I've got to like her or I'd be insulting myself.

Date: 2009-09-18 02:48 pm (UTC)And I think one of the reasons Rube is my favorite is simply the fact that I always, always, always associate him with Inigo Montoya forevermore, and so seeing him spouting things like, "You really fucked the dog there, peanut" left and right automatically cracks me up.
And Jewel Staite's goth girl! That was so fun. And awesome.
