riverdresses: (≈ new wave specs appeal)
[personal profile] riverdresses
Eye exam tomorrow morning at nine-thirty. Grrrr. Definitely not looking forward to sporting my Tenth Doctor/Clark Kent specs or lacking my Edie Sedgwick-esque eye makeup. But I need an eye exam & more contacts quite badly, so sacrifices must be made, alas.

Damn, why don't I ever buy waterproof eye makeup? Waterproof eye makeup & defogger for my specs.

Screencapping continues to be a pain in my arse & there's a good chance that I'm just going to have to do it manually - screencapping is always nice, but doing it manually in VLC is such a drag - tedious, tiring & frustrating. But my caps just . . . vanish if I try to do it automatically, so if I want caps, I'll just have to do it all by hand. Ah, well. I've got some pretty subject matter to work with, so maybe it'll be less of a chore! It'll just take longer to get it all done.

& in less wah-wah-wah, I went skipping off to [livejournal.com profile] fanmix in search of Zod/Tess mixes & whilst I came up empty-handed (booo!) for them, I found - & yes, I'm shocked that I'm even going with this; but crack is fun - a really nice Zod/Lois mix! (Again, my shock is almost immeasurable, but Pandora is wicked shippy if you liked those two. & the phone fakeouts & Salvation up until the phonebooth scene are also pretty shippy. I'd . . . read it? & okay, maybe ship it. But I'm too busy scheming on how to promote moar Zod/Tess to think of them.)

I also forced myself to sit through watched Superman II last weekend. It was . . . well, not my thing, but it was nice. & I thought the fortress of solitude looked really Gallifreyan in design, which amused me during all the dull bits, i.e., the non-Zod or Clark bits.

& you know, the weirdest thing? I came out slightly hearteyes for Clark Kent. But then again, I've never been overly fond of Superman - he bores me, actually, & I was a Batman girl as a child. But Clark? Awww! He gets me right in my heart because of that sweet awkwardness he has. I like cutely awkward sorts!

Hmm. I remember once talking with [livejournal.com profile] nentari about how Sarah Jane Smith, in her early serials with Three, was very Lois Lane-esque herself, even in her wardrobe & overall look. I definitely saw that in the film & I sort of see it in Smallville!Lois too, even though I don't think she & Sarah are as much alike there. I think Smalliville!Lois is maybe a bit more Martha Jones-esque (especially in Pandora!) than Sarah-esque, but they're still a fair bit alike. But, hey, I loved Martha too, so it's a win-win situation all around.

& I'm pretty sure all of that preamble was just so I could mention how the Genesis song Me and Sarah Jane made me think of Clark & Lois without everyone thinking I'd lost my mind. (well, it sort of does! I think you just have to use your imagination to make it fit a bit.)

I went back to using my Twitter today at [livejournal.com profile] wordsindreams' enabling suggestion, since she's using hers more lately. I'm riverdresses there as well, should you want to follow me! (I update way too much there; you've been warned)

Hmm. Sort of want to practise my eye makeup now in lieu of of being able to wear any tomorrow - I know some of it will stay on & make it look like I have some on, so I'd have more of a Nico-esque, rather than Edie-esque look.

Also, LJ fucked around with the tags again, & made it so that any tag with a slash is basically a broken link, so I have to start reorganising my tags soon. GAH, WHAT THE FUCK WAS WRONG WITH THE OLD SYSTEM, REALLY.

Edit: AAAAH OMG, THE MAKER OF SAID MIX MADE A BUNCH OF BEAUTIFUL ZOD & ZOD/LOIS ICONS FUCK YES! ::DANCES:: (It's been a bitch to find good, gorgeous, awesome Zod-centric icons. I DO NOT APPROVE. ::hisses:: brb, swiping & uploading all of them.)

Edit II: I forgot to add above, that after a little thinkythink (& seeing the Zod/Lois icons I flailed about above), I've come to the conclusion that Zod/Lois = Simm!Master/Martha, but somehow, not as squick-inducing for me. (I can read Simm!Master/Martha, but it kind of makes me uncomfortable & I've never figured out why.) Zod/Lois, on the other hand is just hot & twisted, & not like Zod/Tess - that's just evil & hot. So I could feasibly enjoy them more than I ever could Simm!Master/Martha. Go figure.

We all do, I'm afraid - it's the law of life. :( I know what you mean - he's the twins' favourite. But they're in Smallville, ergo you like watching it... right? What happened to make you change your mind like that?

It'll be hard to do so, you know - when I order from Amazon I do it with my father's credit card, so I need his permission - and since he hates Smallville I doubt he'll ever agree to it (and besides, we've both agreed that our next purchases will revolve around a season from The Avengers and the upcoming new Goodies DVD). BECAUSE HE'S NOT A DOCTOR WHO CHARACTER, THAT'S HOW.

We have some sense of self-preservation. BECAUSE I DIDN'T THINK? I'm sure they will. :P
THEY'D BE GIRLS I'D LOVE IF IT WAS THE CASE, ACTUALLY. RIGHT NOW THEY'RE BEASTIES I MILDLY TOLERATE. :P

But kitties should be immortal! ::wails:: Awww! ::giggles:: Well, yes, I suppose so! Well, I saw him all sad - really sad. & lonely. & being harassed by the press in his flat. & I just . . . wanted to put my arm around him & maybe give him a hand squeeze. Then he got all badass defending what he does! So . . . it made me like him, kind of.

::CRIES:: USE YOUR OWN, THEN? :O DON'T YOU SAY THAT AGAIN! ::NIPS AT YOU::

For the most part. :P WELL, YOU SHOULD HAVE! Just watch. ;)
:O YOUZ A MEEEEEEEEEEAN THING, YOUZ! THEY MAKE YOUR LIFE MORE INTERESTING, DON'T THEY?

ALL RIGHT, THEY READ MY LETTER AGAIN! This one being the one asking about the Companion Chronicles, of course, since the Androids of Tara review will be next week. Anyway, my letter worked as an incentive for Tony to bully Bob into finally reviewing Legend of the Cybermen, which he'd been postponing for ages, while Night's Black Agents will be analysed in the near future. As for the other Companion Chronicles I've recommended, they've got quite a long list of stuff to review in the near future, and suggested I'd write them with my own reviews instead. I'm pondering doing that, though of course this will mean I'll have to listen to them again to refresh my memory. Ooh, and Tony placed his mike next to one of his kitties so that we could all hear him purr. :)

They've got nine lives! *pets* You know, they liked EoT but they're not really Tennant fans - Tony even badmouthed Tennant in this recent episode and said he's fed up with the fangirls. Good for him! See? Oh dear, poor Ollie.

I DON'T HAVE ONE, BECAUSE I SPEND TOO MUCH MONEY AS IT IS. :/ ZOD IS NOT A DOCTOR WHO CHARACTER - FITZ IS!

Well, in this particular aspect we do. :P WHY? They behaved badly all weekend, so I didn't show them any Who. Maybe next time...
THEY MAKE ME WANT TO HIDE IN MY QUARTERS AND NEVER COME OUT. *IZSCAREDOFTHEM*

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEK! ::JUMPS UP & DOWN WITH JOY FOR YOU:: OOOO, PLEASE, PLEASE DO IT! How awesome would it be if they read your review? ::TACKLEGLOMPS:: I'm SO happy for you! This means they LIKE your letters, bunny. :P & AWWWW, KITTY PURRS! How was the little darling?

BUT STILL! ::SOBS:: Hmm, interesting - I GUESS it had some merits beyond David (not that I really remember it; I've kind of blocked it out for purposes of sanity & not raging all over people about it), but yes, his fangirls are ANNOYING. Welllllll . . . :P He was lovely then. I wish I could just show you the last five minutes of that episode - it really did make me like him more.

. . . DEBIT CARD? GIRL, THIS IS WHY YOU NEED ONE FOR EMERGENCIES!! WHAT'S A FITZ? ;P

Indeed - even I'm not that batty! BECAUSE THEY THINK YOU'RE OLD NOW! Awwww. :(
:O :O YOU ARE A MEAN BUNNY & THEY LOVE YOU! ::BITES:: DUN BE SCARED OF SWEET GIRLS!

I'm considering it, but I'm also planning to write some reviews of other shows to Professor Dave's podcast (I was planning to write about the Avengers, but since he mentioned Dead Like Me in the latest edition, which I listened to this morning, and since next episode will be a Halloween special I think going for that one first might be a good idea) and I've had the crazy idea of writing a blog in Portuguese reviewing the classic series, since most people in my country only know New Who, I'm wondering if adding audio reviews for this one is not biting more than I can chew. And I think Bob might hate me a little right now, as Tony bullied him mercilessly. Oh, his purr came out very loud and clear - he was clearly very happy. :)

*snuggles* There were some positive aspects here and there (Wilf, mainly), but I agree with Professor Dave that the overall result felt like RTD patting himself on the back. C'mon, admit it. :P Ooh, I'm curious.

I'M USING IT WAY TOO MUCH AS IT IS - AND BESIDES, MY PARENTS WILL STILL REALIZE I BOUGHT SOMETHING AND MY FATHER WILL NOT SHUT UP IF HE REALIZES IT'S SMALLVILLE. A FITZ IS LIKE A ZOD ONLY WITH CARROT-PRINT UNDERPANTS. :P

But unfortunately, the girls are - which is why when I e-mailed Tony about watching Androids of Tara with them, I called them "the mad twins". IT LOOKS LIKE THEY ALREADY THOUGHT I WAS OLD. I had to keep my promise - being naughty equals no Who. :(
THEY STEAL FROM US! AND THEY'RE NOT SWEET - THEY SWEAR, THEY STEAL AND THEY BEAT OTHER KIDS!

EEEEP! (& WAIT, WHAT DID HE SAY ABOUT DEAD LIKE ME? :D & yes, I agree that it would be a fab idea. ^_^) & MOAR EEEEEP - I think you should totally go for it, lovey! But I understand your worry - I'm slowly trying to resurrect my fashion & style blog, but if you don't have a lot to say, it can be tough. But I think you WILL have a lot of stuff to say, especially if you reposted your audio reviews on your blog. (& I could always contribute, but you'd have to translate it, I'm assuming.) & I'm sure he doesn't! AWWWWWW KITTY PURRS. ::flies over the moon with her happiness::

::mews sadly still:: Wilf was lovely, yes, but I still hate it. :( WELL . . . MAYBE A LITTLE. I must see if anyone put it up on YouTube!

FORGET YOUR FOLKS & FOCUS ON THE UNBRIDLED SEXUALITY OF TESS & ZOD THAT YOU CAN BUY! PUT A BIT OF MONEY ASIDE FOR IT? I DO THAT FOR STUFFS! . . . HOW?! & CARROT-PRINT UNDERTHINGS? ::INTERESTED::

I thought you called them the terrible twins! ::thinks:: WELL, MAKE THEM THINK DIFFERENTLY! Awwww. :( THEY STEAL FROM YOU?! :O & I SWEAR, & I STOLE THE BARBARIAN'S DESIGNER SUNGLASSES! BUT I DON'T BEAT PEOPLE UP - I WOULD TOSS MY KIDS OUT ON THEIR EARS IF THEY DID THAT. ::IZ APPALLED::

(He didn't say much - they were reviewing The Princess Bride and one of the girls wondered where she had seen Mandy Patinkin before, and Dave asked if it was from Dead Like Me. (It wasn't.) Oh, and I went to check and they'll be discussing zombie movies/shows for this special and are asking specifically for it, so I'm having second thoughts.) I think the problem is that there's a lot to say - the tricky part is to say it in a way that will appeal to people unfamiliar with it. I'm not sure if I'll manage to post my audio reviews in the blog, though, as I'll be reviewing each of the classic serials in broadcast order (i.e., from An Unearthly Child onwards). (And contributions would be lovely, but the language barrier, as you stated, would make things a bit complicated.) You should have heard him, poor thing - he had spent so long postponing his review, and then some chick from Portugal ruins everything for him. :P He sounded very sweet, y'know. :D

*pets* And I accept that, as I hated everything apart from Wilf and Eleven. Only a little? *goes to search for it as well*

I TRY TO PUT MONEY ASIDE BUT I ALWAYS END UP SKINT AND FIND MYSELF FORCED TO TURN TO IT. :( THEY LOOK ALIKE? AND YES, CARROT-PRINT UNDERTHINGS. AND A MASON IS ALSO LIKE A ZOD, ONLY IN THAT CASE THE UNDERTHINGS HAVE A UNION JACK PRINT.

I called them that in my initial draft, but changed my mind when I edited the thing and changed it to "mad twins" instead. HOW? THEY'RE EIGHT - ANYONE OLDER THAN TEN FOR THEM IS ANCIENT. I've told them, "You either behave or I won't show you Doctor Who", and they shrug, say "Too bad I won't get to watch it" and behave badly anyway. THEY'VE SNEAKED INTO THE SWAMP AND TOOK ONE OF MY OLD TOYS - AND THEN PLAYED WITH IT IN FRONT OF THE REST OF THE FAMILY. AND WHEN CAROL WAS 4, SHE WAS CAUGHT BY HER KINDERGARTEN TEACHER FORCING ANOTHER LITTLE GIRL TO KISS HER GENITALS.

(POUT! BUT . . . I've seen him for a few seconds in The Princess Bride, you know. It was surprising! :P Awwww. :( But still, maybe you can do it in the future? :D) Hee, then you have the opposite problem that I do. But you adore the classics so much that I think you can find a nice, palatable way to talk about it. O, I see - but you could always do it as an occasional feature, perhaps? You don't have to post them, every time you send them, but save them & do them every month, or two months, or something like that? (Aww. ♥ But yes, I understand.) HEEEEEEE. YOU'S A EVIL KITTY THEN! :P ::pets him:: KITTEH LOVE!

::wibbly mew:: Wilf & Eleven were fab, everything else sucked. (except Donna, even though she didn't actually get to DO anything.) MMMM . . . I DUNNO? ::IZLOST:: ::hopes it's there::

WELL, TRY HARDER! IT WAS VERY HARD FOR ME TO BUY ROMANA, YOU KNOW, BUT I GOT HER IN THE END & I COULDN'T BE HAPPIER WITH HER. YOU CAN DO IT! & IT'S FOR A GREAT, SEXY CAUSE! ;D THEY DO? & I DO KNOW WHAT A MASON IS LIKE . . . I MISS HAVING A MASON, YOU KNOW. BUT IF A FITZ WEARS CARROT-PRINT UNDERTHINGS, & A MASON WEARS UNION JACK ONES, THEN WHAT DOES ZOD WEAR? ::EYES YOU CAREFULLY::

::tickles:: Same sentiment. :P :O WHUT! & DUDE, WHY DIDN'T YOU STEAL IT RIGHT BACK? THAT'S WHAT I WOULD HAVE DONE, TINY GIRLS OR NOT! MINE = MINE, DAMMIT! & OKAY, I CAN SEE WHY YOU'D BE SCARED OF THEM, BUT I BET THEY LOVE YOU!

I'll be editing a few things, but will send it today and hope they'll read it - if not next time, then in a different episode.) I hope so. Right now I think I'll postpone my plans for the blog and write a few reviews for the Flashing Blade after all - I'll use it as training for the blog later on. :) I AM, WOE! His kitties are adorable, though some are a bit evil.

*snuggles* Agreed. (I liked Donna's fate in the end - married to a decent guy who loves her AND a millionaire?) Sure you do! *cannae find it*

Indeed. I CONFISCATED THOSE STUFFS BACK - THEY'RE MINE! AND YESTERDAY CATE STOLE MY MOTHER'S ROLL-ON DEODORANT AND ROLLED IT ON EVERY ITEM IN HER WARDROBE! THEY DO, BUT THEY STILL DON'T CARE IF THEY HURT ME WITH THEIR BAD BEHAVIOUR. :(

NOTE: In the previous podcast, Tony and Bob were compared by another listener to Dick Dastardly and Muttley from the Wacky Races cartoons, hence the way I begin this letter. I'm sure I don't need to explain my comment about Penelope Pitstop, right?

Dear Dastardly and Muttley,
(Wait, does that mean Jo is Penelope Pitstop? After meeting her Doctor Who alter-ego in the novel "The Crooked World" I'm not very comfortable with the idea.)

You suggested I'd write my own reviews of the Companion Chronicles I recommended two weeks ago. Challenge accepted. (Oh dear, I'm starting to sound like a Dominator. Sorry, Tony.) For my first review, I choose the Victoria Waterfield story "The Great Space Elevator".

The story begins with a much older Victoria reminiscing about the time she, the Second Doctor and Jamie (or, as the Mad Twins affectionately call him, "Skirt Boy") land in Sumatra sometime in the future. As usual in Victoria's days, they fall right in the middle of a base-under-siege situation - with the base in question this time being a space station linked to the Sumatra base through a long structure known as a Space Elevator. Something very wrong is happening at the station - they send emergency messages only to dismiss those later, the communications officer's voice and manners completely changed. The Doctor manages to convince Security Officer Tara Kerley to let him and his companions accompany her to the station. What follows is a chilling and suspenseful tale that will keep you on the edge of your seat (if you're sitting down, that is) to the very end.

As I'’ve mentioned before, the Patrick Troughton era is my favourite. This is what makes me appreciate the Companion Chronicles so much - it allows us to get new adventures of Doctors that can no longer make an actual appearance, as well as provide us with an interesting look at the way the companions see the events unfolding before them. "The Great Space Elevator" fulfils those two aspects perfectly. It's also the perfect audio to show to someone who has never seen a Troughton episode, as it's both written and produced in such a way that it feels like a typical Series 5 story. From the special effects that would be required to the soundtrack, everything fits with what the production team back in 1967/68 could achieve - the only difference is that it's much, much shorter, which in the case of this particular adventure works as an asset. Tara Kerley's uniform is clearly reminiscent of what Miss Garrett and the other female personnel wore in "The Ice Warriors", and the character itself, played by Helen Goldwyn, is in the same vein of other no-nonsense women of the Troughton era like the aforementioned Miss Garrett or Miss Kelly from "The Seeds of Death". As I listened to it, I could almost imagine the visual effects team rubbing their hands in glee because they'd be given a chance to use their beloved foam machine yet again. The only two things that seem harder to accomplish, the sight of the Space Elevator rising up to the skies and the view from inside the Elevator as it took the Doctor and his friends to the station, would be difficult to achieve, but not impossible.

In conclusion, it's a great story. It pushes the right nostalgia buttons for the Troughton fans, and it also works well as an introduction for the newcomer.

All the best,
Patricia

LOLZWHUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT. XD

& I ADORE your review! You actually captured exactly what it was that made me love this story so much & also, interestingly enough, even though I don't know if you've heard it yet, why I adored Jo's Companion Chronicle, The Doll of Death. (They're not really similar, but they are at the same time - listen to both & I think you'll see what I mean, or not.) THEY NEED TO READ THIS, OMG.

::snugs you for writing such a lovely review::

And Bob can make the Muttley laugh! XD

I'm so glad you liked it! I haven't listened to Doll of Death yet, but I have it and will listen to it as soon as I can.
(Speaking of Jo, the first part of her guest appearance in SJA aired yesterday and part 2 will be on tonight. I have part 1 already but haven't watched it yet, but I've heard of something someone says in it about another companion that has made me go "YAYOMGSQUEE!" I'll share it with you if you want to learn of it straight away, but keep mum if you want to wait. :))

Aww, I like snugs. :D
