& now, here we go, off on the second three recaps of the great & mighty Troughton rewatch-athon!

The Smugglers

- So this serial picks up from where we left off at the end of The War Machines, with Ben & Polly going into the TARDIS to return One's key to him, then him taking off with them inside. This could be a bit harder to recap, because it's a recon, but I'll do my best!

One seems quite angry to have uninvited guests in his ship this time, but actually, I don't think of him as being angry so much as just very surprised. He says himself he thought he would finally be alone after leaving 1966. I think if he were really angry, he would have made a point of throwing Ben & Polly off the TARDIS right then & there, if they hadn't already demateralised. Also, I doubt he would have explained certain aspects of the TARDIS to them like he did if he was so angry or he was planning on ditching them at some point.

- I love Ben's initial shock when he & Polly are inside the TARDIS for the first time. Polly seems to stay very level headed, even though she's just stepped into a huge room in what she thought was a mere police box. It's a good contrast to Ben's shock & general reactions, I think. She doesn't scream or panic, she just listens & asks questions. Very good on her!

- I am a bit surprised that Ben refuses to believe that he's in a time machine, considering what he just went through with One in The War Machines. But I suppose those were a bit of a different set of circumstances - Ben was in his own time, dealing with something dangerous on his territory, not in an alien land millions of years in the past or future. So his reactions are a bit surprising to me, but also a fair bit understandable.

- Teehee! Polly pinched Ben! Well, he did ask for it, so he can't complain now, eh? ::giggles::

- & of course the Doctor's off to follow them - did you really believe he wouldn't? Did anyone really believe he didn't want to keep Ben & Polly safe?

- Polly's enthusiasm is so cute! & any thoughts I may have had as to One's feelings toward them? All gone, save for that he does want them there!

- O dear . . . seventeenth century?

- Polly doesn't like being called Duchess & she doesn't like being called a lad. But Ben just said one of my favourite lines ever! 'Listen to our little dolly rocker Duchess!' LOVE YA, BEN!

- Polly's pragmatic side is showing & Ben's sarcastic, annoyed side is coming out. But still, v. awesome, the both of them! & I DO love how the first things on Ben's mind is some good beer. ::giggles:: Sailors! ::giggle::

- Ben ready to fight for One! GO BEN! ::waves pompoms:: Seriously, I ♥ Ben even more every minute.

- I quite like how Polly insists that Ben be seen to after somebody finally shows up to help her. & I'm glad Ben wasn't too severely injured!

- ARGH NOW I'M WORRIED FOR ONE DAMMIT. I know he can help himself, but still, I'm worried how he's going to get away from a band of pirates & their ship. ::chews fingers::

- WHAT THE HELL WHY ARE BEN & POLLY BEING ARRESTED. Another reason to worry now! & I am worried if they're going to find out Polly's no boy - that could be quite dangerous for her.

- One is quite brave (& a bit saucy!) when being threatened by pirates! & surprisingly, still dapper-looking even when a bit torn up.

- POLLY LOVES THEIR PREDICAMENT! & Ben's all whiny & sour about it - ha! Polly = the better adventuress of the two, perhaps? But seriously, I love how Polly's the one finding the adventure & excitement in their problem, even if she has been accused of murder & is currently sitting in gaol.

- Wait, Polly's excited one minute, then she's screaming about a rat? EXCUSE ME? Hello, inconsistant writing.

Or maybe not inconsistent, but that bit bugs me a fair bit.

- Ah, but Kickass!Polly returns just a bit later, with her plan of faking witchery! ::grins:: Go Polly, go Polly! But alas, for her good moment, we must have her irritating fear of rats - girl, you're in a seventeenth-century gaol - OF COURSE THERE'LL BE RATS! Don't tell me you expected it to be all nice & clean!

(but really, I blame the writers, not Polly. Silly writers.)

- One's got brains, gentility, & he knows how to work the right people in the write places - I'm jealous of Susan getting to be his granddaughter! I love One's manipulation of Captain Pike by playing to his apparent vanity & his flattery of him. One is a BADASS, I must reiterate!

- Polly's become 'Paul' now & GO GIRL, GO GIRL, PLAY ON SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY FEAR LIKE THAT! ::hugs her:: & Ben is a great accomplice in her plans, I must say. But Polly Wright FTMFW, BITCHES! & YAY, THEY'RE FREE! Thanks to Polly's snappy thinking, of course!

Seriously. I love this girl. She's as worthy a companion to the Doctor as any of her predecessors!

- Ben & Polly playing detective together is kind of cute, actually. & awww, Ben's worried about Polly's safety. ♥

- Ben, while not as sophisticated as One, is pretty good at getting information when he wants it, at least so far.

- Hmm. The Squire sounds a bit like One. Just a note!

- & quite an ending to leave off on - I'm rather worried for Ben & Polly now! Where is One, o, where IS he?!

- OMG, One's telling fortunes now! HOW DOES HE GET MORE AWESOME WITH EVERY SERIAL? & hmm . . . I wonder what One's up to . . . doesn't seem like him, telling fortunes - O! PLOY! V. good show Doctor, v. good show! ::shan't doubt One again::

(but I'd not be surprised if the Doctor knew how to tell fortunes in different ways - even if he's really more a man of science & exploration, that doesn't mean he wouldn't know how to perhaps read a tea leaf or two, or cut a Tarot deck.)

- Phew! At last, Ben & Polly have a partial believer! But a partial believer is better than what they had before - nothing!

- OMG ONE'S BACK!! ::hugs him:: Now, the three of them shall kick some pirate arse!

- Wow. One . . . damn, I haven't even got words, but the fact that he feels so morally obligated & responsible for protecting the village is . . . wow. I am . . . I mean, I know all of the Doctor is like that, but hearing him explain it in such solid terms just blows me away. Not that I didn't expect him to try & save the village, along with Ben & Polly, nor did I expect him to run off & leave the village to its own fate so the three of them could go elsewhere, but I don't think I'd expected him to be so open in explaining his feelings about it to Ben. I really can see Barbara's good influence shining through now & I can see that is something she left with him & that he'll not lose, ever.

(um, in short, One is love. & I totally love him even more now, if such a thing is possible.)

- & I love how Polly sides with One completely. She's full of strength & compassion & I love her so. & Ben! I'm a bit disappointed in him for wanting to run off & let the village die so easily, but I'm glad he came around somewhat.

Polly > Ben

- Ooo! Ben & Polly's lark in the graveyard helped One figure out the churchwarden's riddle! & they're getting all the pieces together at quite a pace!

- One's v. brave to make Ben & Polly leave him like that to keep them safe. & Ben's awesome for saying he'll be back for him. ::nods::

- One's so honourable, even when dealing with the likes of Captain Pike. ♥ WHY DO PEOPLE DISRESPECT HIM SO MUCH?!

- ::sighs:: I sort of find Ben rescuing Polly from pirates to be terribly romantic. ::blushes::

- & off they (& I!) go onto their next destination, which, sadly, will be One's final story. But it must be faced with a clear mind, & a brave heart.

The Tenth Planet

- Oooo, the opening titles are quite ominous for this serial - I love them! Immediately makes me think of Cybermen. (& yay, a Kit Pedler story!)

- This serial, if I remember right, is almost entirely intact, save for the final story, which is a recon. So it should be a bit easier for me to recap for the most part. (I'm thinking recapping a serial that's a recon is an art that must be learnt a bit slowly, if one means to pick it up properly!)

- 'Doctor, you have a fantastic wardrobe!' YES! Proof that the Doctor's always had one hell of a wardrobe, even if he was only travelling with Susan! & I LOVE Polly's choice - supercute & warm! & aww, how sweet is it that she gently fusses over One's warmth? 'Like toast, my dear!' LOVE.

- Random fashion note: Polly's carrying a muff! Stylish indeed!

- Sigh, men gawking at pretty, dolly, jolly Polly already? MEN. Ben's not going to like this. I think!

- Ha, One doesn't tolerate ANYONE speaking him in a rude tone! Respect the Doctor or get cut!

- 1986?! OMG. I was expecting them to land in the twenty-first century myself, but 1986?! That's three years before I was born! Wild, man.

- Hmm, so this tenth planet is between Mars & Venus? Why did I think it was near Pluto? (yes, this was the 1960s, Pluto was still a planet!)

- One's knowledge of what this planet means is sort of giving me the creeps. I don't really want to speculate as to what the planet is myself, but his knowing it is just creepy.

- LOLZ, THEY'RE GOING TO TRY & BREAK INTO THE TARDIS? LOLZ, I SAY AGAIN.

- UM. I think we just had our first - no, we HAVE just had our first sighting of Mondasian Cybermen! WHOA. & yes, they disturb me as well as the Telosian ones do. Right now, it's all in their faces.

- Okay, the Cybermen are in the base now. & they're scary, okay?! & their voices are kind of creeeepy.

- Mondasian Cybermen are an interesting breed & they are NOT like the Telosian breed, which is what most of us have seen in future serials - the Mondasian breed only had one serial, I think, & it was this one. nentari & I have/are having quite an interesting talk about the differences between Mondasian, Telosian & Cybus Cybermen, the latter being the new series ones. The Mondasian ones seem, to me, just a slight bit more human than the Telosian ones, or even the Cybus ones. They're more willing to answer human queries about who & what they are, as well as how they became what they are now. They also seem more inclined to carry on a conversation, or something like one, with humans, whereas Telosian & Cybus Cybermen are more of the 'convert delete or kill' sort.

Also, their design is vastly different from their counterparts - more bulky & more tubed in the front, & far less of a metallic face. In fact, their faces remind me of clown faces - & I'm somewhat scared of clowns.

& also, the Mondasian Cybermen still have the stealth of the Telosian ones - which is something the Cybus Cybermen of the new series irritatingly lost - honestly, if the Mondasian Cybermen & the Telosian Cybermen went around stomping & clanking like ghosts with rusty chains attached, it would be far too easy for the Doctor to wipe them out before they even showed up!

- So now the Cybermen threw Ben in a projection room & yet, he's learnt from the Doctor already - never give up, no matter how bleak a situation looks. & his remorse at being forced to kill a Cybermen . . . o, Ben. ::hugs::

(& Polly's at his side already!)

- I was actually only planning to go to the second story tonight, but I'm on the third story & I just can't stop watching! Anyway, Cybermen are - O FUCK! One just collapsed! One just collapsed & the Cybermen are bringing in more & along with spaceships. This is not the best time for One to be taken ill!

- Polly says he just seems worn out. I'm pretty worried about the Doctor, my own self! But I rather liked how Ben insists that he & Polly get back to the others & that there's nothing they can do for him. Be that as it may, I'm worried about One.

- HA. Polly may appear to be making coffee, but that girl's working her ulterior motives in-between adding sugar & cream! To all the Polly haters - SHE'S NOT JUST THE MOTHERFUCKING TEA GIRL, BITCHES! She's got someone on her, Ben & One's side now. Not bad for someone everyone always calls a 'screamer' & 'a tea lady'. IN YOUR FACES, POLLY'S AWESOME.

- Oooo, v. James Bond there Ben, crawling through ventilation shafts like that! & he's got his pocket knife! He's ready, folks.

- Another random note - I LOVE Polly's dress! (or is it a jumper?) Overall, she really looks just fabulous! & her EYES! I WANT HER EYES, OR AT LEAST, HER EYE MAKEUP.

- JERK KNOCKED BEN OUT! ::growls:: But at least Polly's there to help him out a bit. (he looks so sweet whilst unconscious . . . but they both look quite sweet together.)

- Okay, we're in recon mode now - & it is a GREAT recon, seriously. An absolutely cracking recon.

- 'I guess this old body of mine is wearing a bit thin.'

O, One. I . . . I know what will come next . . . but I don't want you to leave!

- Wow, owing a Cyberman your life . . . not a concept I'm so readily familiar with. & saving a Cyberman as well . . . wow.

- Ben is going to cut a Cyberman if they touch Polly. Seriously.

- FUCKERS ARE NOT CONVERTING POLLY, FUCK THAT NOISE. & if they do, Ben & One will rip their heads right off.

- I'm sorry, but the Mondasian Cybermen have faces that are freaking me the fuck out - they look too fucking much like clowns! ::hides::

- WHOA, WHOA, GO BEN! He's caught on that Cybermen can't handle radiation! That would make him the first companion of the Doctor's to realise that Cybermen cannot face radiation without dying.

(incidentally, Polly's the one who kicked some Cybermen arse with nail varnish remover! Those two were damn good against Cybermen!)

- ::is scared for Polly & One::

- Ben is showing his snappy, hit-the-ground-fighting traits again, just like he showed us in The War Machines. ROCK ON, BEN! I just hope he'll be okay after being so close to radioactive materials!

- I love Ben. Sometimes, so far, he's bugged me a bit, but he's awesome & I do love him. He really is a great companion.

- WHOA. Mondas disintegrates, & so do the Cybermen? AWESOME!

- & now Ben's saving Polly & One! But One . . . he doesn't look good at all. He sounds awful & he looks so weak . . .

- Okay, this is . . . not good. He can barely even get Ben & Polly inside the TARDIS! & the TARDIS doesn't even sound like herself!

- & . . . . he's gone. Just like that. He collapsed & One . . . isn't One anymore.

(okay, going to have a bit of sap for a moment here.)

In the mix I made about the nine times the Doctor has regenerated, I used the song Airbag by Radiohead, because, based on the research I'd done on One's regeneration, I felt like it fit his moment of regeneration, particularly the line 'In an interstellar burst/I'm back to save the universe'.

& that's just what happens.

Still . . . I miss One already. ::sad sigh::

Also, nentari & I once had a bit of discussion on what it was that caused One to regenerate - was it because of the Cybermen, or was it simply because his original body was finally forced to regenerate, or he would have died? After watching, I'm pretty much solid on the idea of his regeneration coming about because his first body was just too old & had been through too much & if he hadn't regenerated when he did, he would have died altogether. Also, there is enough evidence throughout the story that his body was finally showing signs of age & that a regeneration would have to come soon.

(I should also say that I am one hundred percent sure that the first body we see the Doctor in is the body he was born with.)

The Power of the Daleks

- Picking up where we left off, One has just regenerated into his second body on the floor of the TARDIS, in front of Ben & Polly, who are lost as fuck as to what's just happened.

- & Patrick Troughton's off to a GREAT start as our second Doctor! I love his post-regeneration scene - v. well played & v. in-keeping with what I've seen the Doctor like after he's regenerated.

- Teehee! Now he's got to examine his new face. & his muscles are a bit tight, alas.

- Now everything's beginning to fall into place for all three of them - Two knows he's the Doctor now, or at least he seems to.

- THE RECORDER!! I LOVE IT! Aww! & he's got his five hundred year diary & knows who Ben is - okay, getting there now, I'd say.

- I love how Polly's the one with full faith in the Doctor; that it is the Doctor & he'll be okay, while Ben's insanely sceptical about everything that's going on around him. It's a good contrast both to each other & to Two's own confusion.

- HE'S PLAYING IT AGAIN. ♥ & Ben appears to be none too happy about it. He's even shouted at Polly. Yeah, he's not in the best of moods. & AWWW, STILL PLAYING IT. I think he's rather good, myself.

- O yeah, this is so the Doctor - plotty, cunning, sneaky & with just the right card up his sleeve. ::grins:: Loving him already, on his first serial! I do hope Ben cuts the 'OMG THIS AIN'T THE DOCTOR!' bollocks already. Preferably very soon.

- I have a really bad feeling about that capsule & the first serial's half over. Meep.

- Two is awesomely sneaky, I have GOT to say that.

- FUCK. Daleks. Well . . . they don't look as deadly as the ones I've seen, but WHAT is that thing on the floor?! & where's the fourth one?

- GAH THAT THING IS DISGUSTING! It looks like a bloody mutated jellyfish!

(I think I've also forgotten that this IS the first time Ben & Polly have ever seen a Dalek. They've met Cybermen, but not Daleks.)

- Christ on a cracker . . . I'm sorry, Cybermen may scare me more, but Daleks can do it pretty well too. & Two saying only one Dalek would be needed to wipe out the whole colony on Vulcan . . . I find it chilling.

- HA! Two's sauciness is sexy! ::blows kiss::

- He's only just regenerated, but he's got the spark & fire of his later time - ♥ Two ♥

- DUDE, WTF, ARE YOU AN IDIOT? WHY ARE TRYING TO REVIVE THE DALEKS? Why don't people just listen to the Doctor when he talks?! Melt the pepperpots down!

- Hee, reference to his meeting Marco Polo! & BEN, CUT THE BITCHING, PLEASE. Polly, however, gets a cupcake for believing him to be the real Doctor.

- 'I never talk nonsense. Well, hardly ever.'

- Wow. Two's actually giving me a bit of a spook in this serial - he's never done that before. It's his mysteriousness, his sense of confusion, the hint of darkness I keep feeling from him. I don't think I've ever known one to be like this - he's always been the Doctor I'd want to be best friends with, to go dancing with, & learn to play recorder from. I know there's more to him than his outward silliness & cheerful disposition, like how there's more to Eight than his giddiness & Romantic tendencies, but unlike with Eight, I've never seen Two's darker side - or maybe I have & don't remember it - prior to now. I've seen his cleverness, his wit, his capabilities, but not so much this . . . darkness I just feel from him in this story.

- EARTH PEOPLE ARE TWITS. WHY, WHY, WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO REVIVE A DAMN DALEK?! Okay, FINE, get your silly selves exterminated, so you don't pollute the rest of the human gene pool by procreating. ::sighs loudly::

- More recorder playing! & I love the discussion between Polly & Ben over the deputy governor's guilt or innocence. I think it's an interesting showcase of their personalities, as well as their emotions & of course, their feelings on the situation at hand.

- O, FUCK ME, WHY ARE EARTH PEOPLE SUCH FOOLS. & Two agrees with me, I see. ::glares:: (& maybe NOW Ben will quit the bitching about him being the Doctor or not.)

- The very last half of the second serial, when the Dalek begins to speak, & Two's desperately trying to explain a Dalek's true nature & both are sort of vocally (or should I say aurally?) overlaid is both haunting & chilling.

. . . Okay, it's just scary. To me, anyway. People, just melt down the Daleks before you get yourselves wiped out!

- Any time a Dalek claims to be 'helping' a human? It's time to bash the thing in the eyestalk with a baseball bat.

- GET YOUR GRUBBY HANDS OFF MY DUCHESS BASTARDS!

- More recorder playing! & when Ben finds out they've kidnapped Polly, he is going to blow a frakkin' fuse.

- O, sure, let's just hand over lots of shiny stuff to the Daleks all willy-nilly, why don't we? ::sighs even louder::

- O.fuck.me. The Daleks have all been reactivated. That colony is SCREWED.

- O no. Two's been discovered. Now HE'S screwed!

- & now people are leaving pseudo-ransom notes about Polly? ::glowers:: NOT ON.

- HALLELUJAH, SOMEONE'S SLOWLY BEGINNING TO AGREE WITH TWO.

- Dalek reproduction is . . . . well . . . . let's pretend I don't know about it, okay?

- 'You think you're very tough, don't you, pushing a girl around. I'd like to see you come up against a real man.'

'Like who?'

'Like Ben for instance!'

Polly-girl, you are the awesome.

- . . . . Did Two just use his recorder to break out of a prison cell?

THAT RECORDER IS A WEAPON IN HIS HANDS! & he is made of some serious win, people.

- For some reason, I find Two telling Polly that Ben can take care of himself to be quite sweet.

- & yes, the ending of the fifth part gave me some massive chills. Dalek voices are v. scary when they layer over each other like that.

- My shippy little heart went all fluttery when Ben & Polly finally got to see each other again. Awww.

- Ben comforting Polly! O . . . ♥♥

- 'Why can't you just take all the plugs out and cut the power?'

'Because I prefer to do it my way!'

Hee! I love Two's stubbornness; it's one of my favourite things about him.

- Something I've not noted yet - the concept of one scientist 'giving' life to the Daleks - it feels very Frankenstein-esque, in my opinion. Not only were the Daleks brought to life by a human, they killed humans as well. Of course, all under very different circumstances. But it did put me in mind of the story.

- Ah, a sneaky escape, as the Doctor prefers. ::smiles:: & more recorder playing!!

- & away they go, off to new places & new faces! Bravo, bravo! ::claps::

Whew! This was the official beginning of the great & mighty Troughton rewatch-athon & alas, the ending point of the Hartnell era for now. (but I've a load of Hartnell-era serials to watch!) The next three serials will be The Highlanders (!!!), The Underwater Menace & The Moonbase, the last two I may supplement with my Lost in Time DVD collection.

it is awesome - probably my favourite British comedy of the past decade, tied in with My Hero (starring Ardal O'Hanlon, who played cat-man Brannigan in Who's Return of the Macra Gridlock) and My Family (starring Zoe Wanamaker (Lady Cassandra) and Kris Marshall (my casting choice for Jo's son in the Fourteenverse). It's impossible for me to decide which of the three I love the most.

Awww! :D I think one of the only non sci-fi British things I've seen in a while would be the show Black Books, which is ABSOLUTELY hysterical & deals with one of my favourite things - BOOKS! & the very mad life of the owner of said bookshop, his assistant & their friend. Ah, good show, that is. (the other one would be Secret Diary of A Call Girl - quite good & so is the book!)

Wow - aside from Doctor Who & a few assorted shows I have on DVD, I just realised, I almost never actually watch tellyvision anymore - to be honest, TV here in the States nowadays just SUCKS. Everything I watch is either from the UK, filmed there, or a film, which may or may not be connected to the former two. I'm happy to watch my Who!

& it sounds like your father DID have some pretty cool memories of the sixties - more than either of my folks did - both were SO depressingly dull - & O! I remember watching The Fugitive when I was small, but of course, I don't think I appreciated it as much then as I did now. & the barbarian used to tell me how she'd watch that along with The Avengers - but alas, I still can't get her to sit & watch any sixties era Who with me. (the only time I really DID, it was The Mind Robber & even SHE thought Two was looking up Not!Jamie's kilt at one point. I was . . . highly amused, to say the least!)

I wonder if they were aware of the subtext... *grins*

I have a good feeling they totally weren't. ::giggle::

I think my favourite thing regarding the photobooth scene is just how confused he is about it.

As I described him in my recap last night, he looks all sort of, 'Meh, I don't know what the hell is going on here.' & I LOVE IT! & awww, Two's crazy little face. ::hugs him:: (I fangirled like crazy in my recap of The Faceless Ones - for such a sad recon, I got a LOT of fangirling out of it!)

I don't think I'll ever watch Secret Diary of A Call Girl - I find the thought of all those Who actors ga-ga over Billie Piper (who else? *rolls eyes*) a bit disturbing.

I remember watching The Fugitive when I was small, but of course, I don't think I appreciated it as much then as I did now.
I rather enjoyed it when I was little, myself. Our classics channel repeated it recently, and it made me feel very nostalgic.

I don't think I'll ever watch Secret Diary of A Call Girl - I find the thought of all those Who actors ga-ga over Billie Piper (who else? *rolls eyes*) a bit disturbing.

Ah, yes, that COULD be off-putting for some, I can understand that. (but the book it's based on is very good, by the by. Well, if you wanted a sexy nonfiction read, but I could rec you better than that if you did.) & yes, I admit I just watched it for miss Piper & her various states of undress & of course, because she's so beautiful. & it was nice to see her in a totally different role than what she'd played in Doctor Who. (of course, some of my friends have written Secret Diary of A Call Girl/Who Belle/Rose crossovers, which is nice, I suppose, but at the same time, kind of makes me sigh & not really in a good way.

& you know, I've been thinking of looking at The Avengers sometime - more awesome sixties fashion to swoon over, plus, tough, awesome heroines! Win-win, I think. :D

The thing is, I disliked Billie Piper before Doctor Who, back when she was known as "the British Britney" (a nickname that says it all), so I was amazed when I initially took a liking to Rose. Of course, season 2 then reared its ugly head and the mental images of her "British Britney" days came back with a vengeance - enhanced by the fact that she's now a blonde. *shrugs* I can't help myself.
Regarding crossovers, even though I haven't read any, I know that people have made crossovers between Who and The Sally Lockhart Mysteries, which star Billie and Matt Smith. There have been graphics and icons around of the two of them from Sally Lockhart with "Eleven/Rose" written on.

& you know, I've been thinking of looking at The Avengers sometime - more awesome sixties fashion to swoon over, plus, tough, awesome heroines! Win-win, I think. :D
There are quite a few eras for you to check out. They all star Patrick MacNee as John Steed, but his companions change. First, there was a male companion, Dr. David Keel (in this first season, Keel was the main character and Steed the companion). Then, there was Cathy Gale, played by Honor Blackman (who was also in Goldfinger and Doctor Who), but most of her stories (and all of Keel's episodes save two) have been burninated - sadly the BBC was not the only company in Britain to be stupid. Then, it was the most classic era, with Diana Rigg as Emma Peel (as a child I watched the early Emma episodes, in black-and-white, but now the ones in colour are the only ones that are repeated over here). Both Dr. Gale and Mrs. Peel are famous for wearing catsuits and for kicking butts à la Zoe (in fact, I believe they must have been the inspiration when Zoe was created). After Diana Rigg left the show to do the Bond movie, Emma Peel was replaced by Tara King, played by Linda Thorson, who in personality was closer to the innocence of Jo and Victoria (and, like Jo and Victoria, she kicked ass) and who preferred miniskirts to catsuits. She also had an interesting collection of mod-looking wigs, something that appeals to my bad hair. :P
And then, in the '70s, Steed paired with a martial arts expert played by Joanna Lumley in The New Avengers, but I'm afraid I don't know much about that version.

The thing is, I disliked Billie Piper before Doctor Who, back when she was known as "the British Britney" (a nickname that says it all), so I was amazed when I initially took a liking to Rose. Of course, season 2 then reared its ugly head and the mental images of her "British Britney" days came back with a vengeance - enhanced by the fact that she's now a blonde. *shrugs* I can't help myself.

Hmm, I'd actually never known her to be known by such a name - I COULD see the similarities, but Billie > Britney for me. Billie's . . . less cracked than Britney, I think. & I like singing her music more! :P But yes, I can see why series two!Rose would make you cringe - she was good in series two, but nowhere NEAR how awesome she was in series one - I love series one!Rose like crazy. She was way more relatable for me & more like a realistic person than the 'super-companion' she kind of became. (Rose was my first companion, so I'm probably a bit biased by default, but also, I DID meet Rose & Nine when I WAS the same age Rose was when she met him & I have a lot in common with her series one self.)

Regarding crossovers, even though I haven't read any, I know that people have made crossovers between Who and The Sally Lockhart Mysteries, which star Billie and Matt Smith. There have been graphics and icons around of the two of them from Sally Lockhart with "Eleven/Rose" written on.

WHAT. Okay, maybe I shouldn't say anything, as I ship companions with Doctors other than their own (like how I ship Sarah Jane/Eight & Eight/Romana & such), but HELL.NO. I do NOT want Rose back when Eleven comes around. Look, she's GONE, she WON'T be brought back & I hope like HELL she won't be back when Eleven finally arrives. I'm really ready for a new companion & some new faces; I'd really prefer not to have Rose brought back. If anything, I'd like to see some of the Classic!companions other than Sarah come back, if possible. (if we can't have that, then can we have, o, I don't know . . . maybe unexpected!Anneke Wills & Frazer Hines popping up in cameos, a la David Troughton in Midnight? Yes, that's sort of a topper on my series five wishlist; more references to Classic!Who & Frazer to appear totally unexpectedly. Or Anneke. Or Katy Manning. :D)

I remember him in an episode from one of my favourite '70s comedy shows, The Goodies, playing a Welsh vicar with a greasy, Snape-like wig. :P Pat was in another, earlier episode, playing a supervillain called Professor Ratfink Von Petal. For some reason Pat's episode was never aired on BBC Prime, sadly.

Agreed - with Nine she was a bit more like Ace, only she stood up to Nine more & didn't let him stop her from doing what she really wanted & she wasn't afraid to sass him if she felt like it. But with Ten, her relationship sort of dissolved into this soppy romance thing, with a lot less of the spark it had when he was Nine. (& honestly, I've always been kind of pissed off at her for how rude & condescending she was to Sarah Jane in School Reunion - I love that episode because if I hadn't seen it, we wouldn't BE having this talk right now, but I've always hated Rose's behaviour in it. In some places I feel like MAYBE she had a right to be a little angry, but she didn't need to be an out & out bitch to Sarah - I mean, she's travelled with the Doctor too - have some respect!

(& a sidebar to that episode: I HATED Sarah Jane calling the Doctor's new companion 'his new assistant' - I think it was kind of out-of-character for her. Back when I was all about the new series (I'm so divorced from it now, I'm not even bothering to watch the specials, I'm just waiting for Eleven to show up & be AWESOME), Tooth and Claw was a favourite episode of mine. I haven't watched it in so long, so forgive my ignorance, but how DID Ten & Rose behave that bothered you so? Honestlt, all I remember is the library scenes, me not liking Queen Victoria, the werewolf & later on, learning that the name Ten used was that of a former companion.

Actually, back in Three's era she was sort of his assistant and didn't flinch at the mentioning of it - I think it was the status ultimately given to her by the Brig in order to allow her permission to visit the facilities when she so wished, and to stop the top brass at Geneva to assign a new, unwanted assistant to Three. Of course, I don't know for certain so don't quote me on this. Anyway, since companions were better known as assistents at the time (mostly because that's the occupation Liz and Jo had at UNIT, which is why I've built this theory about Sarah Jane having that in her UNIT record as well) I didn't find it at all surprising that Sarah Jane would call Rose an assistant.

Mostly, it was the fact that they were clearly so excited and amused with everything that was happening around them even though people were dying. I could relate to the Queen's frustration, as she was concerned with the EFFING BIG WEREWOLF trying to murder the lot of them, and those two strangers were so giggly and more concerned with trying to make her say "We are not amused" than in the people dying all around them.

When she came back in series four, when you DIDN'T see her with Ten (when she shoots the Dalek advancing on Wilf & Sylvia, I think), those were her moments of awesomeness, at least for me. Then she gets reunited with Ten & it's all 'OMG I LOVE YOU OMG I MISSED YOU SO MUCH OMG I LOVE YOOOOU!!!!111' & her kickass factor just drops. Though I liked her walking through the streets of London with that HUGE gun (Ace might have liked that gun, I think!), surveying all the madness & damage around her, then threatening the looters with her gun. Actually, that's one of my favourite bits from Journey's End - 'Do you like my gun?' ::grins:: She had some badassery there for a bit, I think. But yeah, as said, when she gets back to Ten, it's all too sugary & ugh, no fun. & then , as I've seen someone put it, she throws something of a temper tantrum when she goes back to her own universe WITH HER OWN TEN. O, boo-hoo, it isn't the full Time Lord edition!Ten, SHUT UP & BE LUCKY YOU CAN HAVE HIS HALF-HUMAN CLONE, OKAY? I just don't see the need for her whining when SHE HAS HIM, but a bit better - he'll never regenerate & they can be together for a human lifespan. Where's the loss in that?

Hmm, I actually could see that & I like it too! (I haven't seen - well, almost ANYTHING of her time with Three, so maybe I shouldn't talk about it at all) But at the same time, I think she would have guessed that the Doctor was no longer with UNIT (if she was keeping in contact with the Brig or Harry, as I TOTALLY believe she would have), so he would have no need for an assistant by then - he could just travel with people as he pleased. Ah, I remember a bit better now - I'd totally agree now that the (no pun intended!) rose-coloured glasses are off me, that they were acting pretty childish when they SHOULD have been acting more serious & trying to, you know, HELP people, instead of being concerned over their own cheap thrills & silly bets. Ugh, you're absolutely right there. It's so clichéd (the old running-into-each-other's-arms-in-slow-motion routine) and so annoying! The only nice thing about that scene was Donna's smile, as I know she has always wanted the Doctor to be able to see Rose again.

Besides the temper tantrum when Rose gets returned to Pete's universe with 10.5, it also annoys me when she's with Sylvia and Wild watching the conference and Martha appears, and she throws her skreechy "Who is she?!" It reminds me of the "Doctor's Girls" wallpaper my Polly icon comes from, and makes me remember one of the reasons why my future Fourteenth Doctor fics is to be a multi-Doctor story: besides wanting to make the Short Doctors Club team up together (and having the three of them jam with each other's instruments of choice - Two with the recorder, Seven with his spoons, and Fourteen with her [cut for spoilers]), wanting to give a proper appearance to Thirteen and his companions (who until then only show up to regenerate or are mentioned in conversation - with Jamie meeting one of the companions between fics), and wanting Jamie to meet Two again, I also want Rose to be surrounded by past companions who meant a lot in the Doctor's life so that she can get a dose of humility, I want Mickey to be treated with a little respect, and I want Fourteen to pwn Ten at every given moment and to point out just why she thinks he's annoying.
And, of course, I want to play the Terrance Dicks card and insert some plot instances that might help explain some annoying plot holes from other multi-Doctor stories, since the Fourteenverse doesn't have Season 6B to correct those holes. But that's another story.

Actually, I don't think she was throwing a temper tantrum - she was in fact oddly rational when compared to how she would normally behave in those circumstances. And we should not forget that that's actually Pete's universe, and that her own universe is the one she once again left; equally, that's not her own Ten, but a clone like the Valeyard. Still, I think she got a best deal with 10.5 than she would have had by returning to the TARDIS with Ten, since he has some Donna kickassery added to him, and in some ways reminds me more of Nine than Ten, and needs her more the way Nine did - which means she can be awesome again while she's with him.

As for the Brig, I'm yet to see the two episodes of SJA where he makes a return (it's the only story from that series I haven't watched yet), so I cannot say if they're still in contact or not. But if they are, he would probably have told her about meeting Seven in Battlefield, which is meant to take place in our own time rather than when it was made, and so she would be aware of the Doctor still getting involved with UNIT, and of the existence of a feisty, ass-kicking assistant who glomped the stuffing out of the Brig. :P
And also, we don't know how many adventures Eight could have had with UNIT besides the ones that might have appeared in the audios; I'm definitely not counting the EDAs for this, especially after what they did to the Brig.

Okay, so this is S1 Rose (the Ten shown in this webcomic being from sometime between Runaway Bride and Smith & Jones), but whenever other companions are concerned, she becomes School Reunion Rose. Ace is the one that takes it worse of all, since she has no patience for this sort of crap - but luckily S1 Rose's personality soon returns.

I accept his "tin dog" analogy because it's his own low self-esteem talking, and he hasn't met K9 in full form. Had he met him while he was fully functional and in kickass mode, I'm sure Mickey would have been proud and even inspired by such a comparison.

I don't think you do, but here goes: in a pre-EDA novel he undergoes some sort of regenerating of his own, which makes him young again and looking the way he did back in the Invasion. Then, his wife Doris dies in a boating accident, and he becomes depressed and guilt-ridden. He is then reunited with Eight when a gateway between our world and a world of dreams in another dimention is opened, and in his depression he becomes suicidally stupid and inadvertedly causes a war between both worlds, severing his friendship with the Doctor. In the end the Doctor solves everything, the Brig finally achieves his inner peace, and when the gateway is closed he remains in the dream world, where he gets involved with the queen of dreams, who is a Leela-like warrior and wears a necklace made of human male genitalia. *groans*

Oh, definitely. Two would have played Doctor Von Wer again, and he would have never let the accent slip. As for One, he wouldn't need any accent - he just had to be himself, and people would accept his authority. I'm sure the Queen would have loved him.

Oh, definitely. Two would have played Doctor Von Wer again, and he would have never let the accent slip. As for One, he wouldn't need any accent - he just had to be himself, and people would accept his authority. I'm sure the Queen would have loved him.

PRECISELY!! It drove me CRAZY then & now it REALLY drives me crazy when I think about it. But yes, she would have loved One; he would have been far better company for her, & he would have enjoyed talking with her & have probably kept her calm when chaos was all around them. & Two would have just been his usual awesome self, much like he was in The Highlanders & of course, he would have had THE James McCrimmon with him! Wouldn't that make for a nice bit of fix-it fic? One, Susan, Ian & Barbara having tea with Queen Victoria, or maybe just him & Vicki? THEN something dangerous can happen & One can be wonderful as ever? (& his companion, or companions, of course!)

Though I have to say, Two & Jamie would be fun to make fix-it fic with that as well - Jamie being home well after Culloden & dining with royalty! & of course, Doctor von Wer - it could be insanely comical, I think. Well, Vicki was never alone with One, apart from that initial sequence in The Time Meddler, which means they'd either have Ian and Barbara with them as well, or Steven. And even though Steven can be a bit... well, Steven, he'd know how to behave himself in a dignified-enough manner for the Queen to be favourably impressed.
And then she'd be even more impressed if she managed to get a glimpse of how snugly his tight trousers look from behind while the team was busy keeping her safe from monsters. :P

I haven't seen Life on Mars yet, though I'm familiar with the story. Doctor Who is the only thing I've seen with John Simm so far.

O, it's WONDERFUL, it really is. I'm never sure what to think of it as - a cop drama or a sci-fi story - it's both, I think. I haven't seen its spinoff Ashes to Ashes yet, but I want to - it's pretty much the same story, but with enough differences to make it appealing in its own right. & John Simm is AMAZING in it, truly amazing. (he brought me to tears in the very first episode, if that's anything to go by. & the last show of the series had me out & out SOBBING. It's intense. I can't recommend it enough. :D)

Mine will eventually meet them, but there's still a long way to go before that happens and I'm still unsure of his reaction.

Hmm . . . yes, Fitz DOES like his ladies but he loves his Doctor!, but would he pay for one? Hmm.
Actually, it's more the other way around. In the latest EDA I read, he decides to get a job while he waits for the Doctor to break out of prison on his own (his faith that the Doctor will make it is such that he is just not concerned about it, to the annoyance of their companion), and answers to an ad he's seen in the newspaper. Here's an excerpt of the job interview:

Clearing his throat of its dryness by trying to make it sound like a nonchalant cough Fitz asked, ‘So are you going to let me in on the secret? I mean it’s all been pretty shady up until now. I take it this isn’t a legal operation?’
Darlow smiled again. Scary. ‘Depends on your definition of legal, I suppose. We’re an escort agency, if you like. Escort agencies are perfectly legal, aren’t they Svad?’
Svadhisthana nodded. ‘Perfectly.’
Escort Agency? Now that definitely sounded like something Fitz should be checking out. He once had the TARDIS make him up some business cards with the immortal legend – ‘Fitz Kreiner – Freebooter and Gigolo’ emblazoned on them in red velvet. He’d never had the chutzpah to use one and had hidden them away for fear of Anji finding them, but now the idea of being some dashingly tuxedoed date for some dame with far too much money seemed like the kind of career move that, even if it was only for one night, might be the direction to take.

Things go sour, as the sort of escourting he has to do is in a virtual reality simulator (this is an alien planet in the future, after all), and his client kidnaps him while he's still under the effect of the machine, and so his memory is gone, as he believes he's a 17th century swordfighter, and he's artificially in love with the woman. At the end of the novel, his memory returns once he hears the Doctor's name, but he's still conditioned enough that the woman can manipulate him into doing everything she wants. However, when the Doctor is in trouble and she tries to work the condition to make Fitz run away with her and abandon the others, he turns to her and says: ‘I’ve been engineered to love you, Carmodi. With the Doctor... it’s the real thing.’

That would not be disagreeable to me! :D I'd love to see maybe a Sarah-esque episode, only with Dodo meeting Eleven's companion & telling her some stories about the good ol' days in the TARDIS. (& maybe about the Celestial Toymaker! O! That'd be a GREAT way to bring him back - with Dodo!)

I remember him in an episode from one of my favourite '70s comedy shows, The Goodies, playing a Welsh vicar with a greasy, Snape-like wig. :P Pat was in another, earlier episode, playing a supervillain called Professor Ratfink Von Petal. For some reason Pat's episode was never aired on BBC Prime, sadly.

You know . . . I think that's how I first found your LJ, actually! I remember watching some of each & OMG, Pat & Jon were DELIGHTFUL in them! I bookmarked them when I found them (though back then I think I was there for the Pertwee awesome) & hmm, I should find them again. :D

Incidentaly, Celly (I can't stop calling him that every since I've read the Ten Doctors webcomic) was meant to have returned to the show in 1985. The story had been written and everything, according to a documentary from the Trial of a Timelord DVDs - but BBC then forced the show to go on an 18-month hiatus while they discussed if it would be cancelled altogether, and the episodes that were commissioned for that season were never made, and when the show returned it was with Trial. Luckily, Big Finish came to the rescue and they're turning the serials from that missing season into Six & Peri audio adventures. Hopefully, Michael Gough will be playing Celly again - he's 95 now, but he still has the energy.
(Also, a bit of trivia: from 1963 to 1979, Michael Gough was married to Anneke Wills - and they named their daughter Polly!)

You know, I have a few Goodies episodes in .avi format. Sadly, the episodes with Pat and Jon are not among them, I'm afraid (I thought I had them in .avi as well, but I can't find them anywhere). They did a lot of Doctor Who references (which were what led me to watch Who in the first place), and were overall brilliant. And I think one of the (Graeme Garden, the mad scientist of the group) could have made a good Doctor.

I've listened to it SO many times before & I NEVER REALISED UNTIL NOW IT WAS JAMIE, TWO & VICTORIA TALKING! & I've been trying to figure out WHAT Doctor & companion it was for YEARS! If it wasn't so late here, I'd literally be jumping for joy - I finally figured it out AND it was a sample of one of my favourite Doctors & one of my top favourite companions!
