riverdresses: (5-D • not a place that Polly hasn't been)
O, splendid, splendid day! ::spins about::

As it turns out, my stylist, who'd said she'd be in 'any time after three' wasn't in at all, thereby leading to a very disappointed Betsy. (but the walk up there was nice; the barbarian & I chatted about sixties fashion & mod & she told me her first minidress was bought from a boutique in the Upper North Beach area, where all the mod shops were. I think hers was an Alexander Danskin, or someone named something like that!) The barbarian said we should just go somewhere else & have my fringe done, but I was really reluctant to let anyone snip bits of my locks off that wasn't my stylist that I've been seeing since I was a tiny lass - since I had my very first fringe done! (which was super-curly, like my hair, & I think, much shorter than I would have it now. There's a picture of it somewhere in the house, I think.)

In the end, we decided to have dinner first & look at a couple of hairdressers that were nearby. The first place neither of us liked, the second was appointment-only, but the third one, I pointed out & it was a hit! So I popped in & asked if they could take me as a walk-in, which they could, I showed them my pictures of Anneke Wills & Jane Birkin & poof! I was in the chair & making cheerful chatter with my very nice stylist who has a house in the country, regular three-day weekends & luckily for me, had a client stuck in traffic on the bridge, so he could see me! He gave me a few lovely pointers on trimming my fringe (though I think I'll keep this with the professionals!) & only charged us five dollars for my whole cut, plus a card.

Five dollars & I look quite dolly with my fringe! I absolutely love it & it looks great with the plaid shift, which I wore again, as I wanted to see how my hair would look with one of my dresses. I took a nap earlier, so it dried a bit & is a bit waved-looking, but it's my fab, rather sexy, if I may say so (but it's just my opinion!), fringe!

(& my hair could use a bit of a washing & re-straightening, so it'll probably look even more dolly when my hair's in better shape.)

So I succeeded in finding a secondary stylist & didn't wind up like some poor birds who go in with aspirations of glamour-girl hair & leave looking more scary than sexy, which is what I was so afraid would happen! IT'S WONDERFUL, ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL! My fringe! It's perfect!

Not to mention, we took my white boots to the cobbler's, the price to have my heels redone & my boots cleaned was far less expensive than we'd expected & I'll be picking them up next Wednesday. ::spirals about with happy::

Also, the barbarian's letting me play with her Bumpits hairstylers to see if they'll work for me, so I can get a pair of my own.

Now for the uninformed, or the loves with just shorter hair & therefore no need to do much with it, Bumpits are these styling tools that give your hair more volume & a bit of a shape - you tease your hair, put one under what you teased, whip out the hairspray (do you know I don't own any of my own hairspray? I'm surprised, but then again, I never had much of a use for it until now), spray it in place & ta-da! Sexy volumized hair! It also comes with a little style & use pamphlet & a teasing comb & they have them in several colours, all in three sizes per set: red, light blonde, light brown (hers), dark brown & black. She says dark brown is probably what I should get, since that's my hair colour, despite the fact that some people think my hair is actually black. It's not - it's very dark brown, but in the sun, you can see it better & also see the (natural) red highlights in it.

It's cheating a bit, I suppose, not doing a proper huge Amy Winehouse-esque beehive, but I still think these would work with my look - you can wear them in quite a few different ways!

Anyway, now that I have my furiously fab fringe, I promise there will be a few pictures of it, me & my fashion collection! I just need to wash & restyle it a bit so it doesn't look all dirtyish - I'd been expecting a wash at the stylist's, but ah, was not to be. Nevertheless! I can do that myself!

Also! It's Labour Day weekend here in the States & Canada, I believe, so I'll be recapping the final story for the great & mighty Troughton rewatch-athon tomorrow & devoting Sunday & Monday to the little wrap-up party!

(honestly - I've really been a busy lass all week!)

& I'm listening to Doctor Who and the Pirates right now - Six being a 'fine, distinguished sailor with a stylish outfit!' ::giggles madly:: I love it!

(O! speaking of Six, I think I've found what Japanese fashion niche he'd fit into, or at least the closest I could find - he makes me think of the brand Takuya Angel! Takuya Angel combines traditional Japanese fashion elements with a more futuristic, loudly-coloured look. Six has a traditional look, very classic sorts of lines, but he's very brightly coloured & fun-looking at the same time. He's like an explosion of colour, like a devotee of Takuya Angel! So he'd be probably thought of as an Angeler, as fans of the look are known, in my opinion.

& someone totally needs to write Six & Peri in nineties Harajuku & getting photographed for FRUiTS magazine. But I can't take credit for this idea - it was all [livejournal.com profile] vrrrrt's! I just tossed miss Peri in there because she'd be cute, I think. But what look would she sport for the day?)

O my stars & garters, it's been a time since I've done a linkspiral, hasn't it? Well here, have a huge, supermassive fannish, fashion & lovely linkspiral, lovecakes!
☂ A surprise wedding reception as shown to us by Katie of Color Me Katie! I adoreadoreadore such an idea & if my state hadn't decided to be such a humiliating blot on civil rights, I might have contemplated doing something like that myself!

☂ Ingrid of Fashion is My Muse writes about an enchanting visit to an embroidery school/atelier & the work she created whilst there. Schools devoted to embroidery! I can hear all of the princesses & Lolita devotees swooning now!

☂ The effervescent miss Gala Darling shares with us fifty amazing alternatives to the traditional 'dinner & a film' type of date - o, if only I could try just one of these out with someone! & she borrows a line from Withnail & I! O, GALA, MY DARLING! ::sighs happily::

☂ Now some, if not most of you, know I'm a considerably serious dieter, but even I couldn't resist teasing you lot with this delicious confectionery post from Luphia loves . . . of course! Dieter damsel, yes, but sweets are rather lovely to look upon, no?

☂ A lovely set of posts have been posted recently over at NineteenTeen which are all about flirting with props! In order: Flirting with Props, Part One: Handkerchiefs. Flirting with Props, Part Two: Gloves. Flirting with Props, Part Three: Fans. Flirting with Props, Part Four: Parasols!

(which reminds me - summer is nearly upon us & I must replace my parasol & acquire a decently elegant fan for my handbag! & if you didn't think I used a parasol when weather permitted, then you must not know me very well!)

☂ Violet Blue is, aside from one of my favourite local personalities/sex blogger & author, is back & beautiful, motherfuckers. ♥♥♥ I loved this post, so naturally, I'm including it here. (& nope, not worksafe, folks!) Seriously. She's pretty damn inspirational to me. I love her work.

☂ Carrie of Wishwishwish introduced me to Nothing Elegant. As a paper & stationary addict, I am just in love with . . . everything in that shop! I WANT IT ALL. Fab writing gear, wouldn't you agree, loves?

Cloud Watching from Skye of the princess portal brings us this lovely post at her new blog. ♥♥♥

(this morning the sky was full of cotton ball clouds after the rain of last night. Cloud dreams, cloud girls, o, I wanted to stop to take pictures of it. It was a perfect Wednesday morning sky.)

☂ Gala Darling's being a complete dollface by showing (& asking what in ours!) what's in her bag!

(goddammit, I want her Gauloises! You can't get them here in California, apparently. What?! & I must do a similar post over at From Out of the Rain.)

Neighbourhood glamourbombing by Katie of Color Me Katie!

(I do think this will be a summer project for me, my darlings. Stars, hearts, quotes, jewels, all over the city! & I heartily encourage you lot to try & do the same!)

☂ This post is so stunning that it needs no introducing - Still Water as given to us by Skye of the lost princess.

Dreamy & chic as posted by Tina at Luphia loves is . . . oooo, I just want to slip inside those pictures & live in that misted, hazed wonderworld.

(do I dare save these pictures? they could be lovely icons . . . )

Introducing... Isobel Oval!

I ♥ Gala's mind. Such posh lushness!

the dream cookies of Color Me Katie - o, pleasepleasePLEASE, someone, figure out how to make such lovelies! I'd break my diet just for a few!

& o, I swoon over the last picture - yes, a perfect lipstick!

Moondust from the lost princess.

(I wish I had the ability to leave shimmer everywhere I went. Leaving it on one's sunglasses, from one's eye makeup isn't quite the same, alas. Not heavy shimmer, but light, soft trails of it, so if you needed to find me, you would literally, only have to follow the stars.)

☂ the lovely miss [livejournal.com profile] marah_sarie did an amazing bit of fanart featuring Zoe Heriot in a Star Trek uniform - CHECK IT OUT, FOLKS!

& you all TOTALLY know Zoe would rock one of those uniforms. O yes.

☂ & last but in NO WAY LEAST, [livejournal.com profile] hoshinekoyasha did one hell of a Charley Pollard picspam, bbs! GO. LOOK. I COMMAND YOU. YOU WILL OBEY ME.

(my personal favourite is this particular drawing - a lovely rendering of miss Charley Pollard!)

'. . . but it proved to be a wet, ungenial summer . . . ' were it not so late, & I not so lazy, I would rise, make myself tea, & write of things to be done on this sort of night in my diary.

1:01 AM Jun 3rd from web

I do wish it was raining again tonight. If it was, I would write in my proper diary for a bit by tealight, or just lie down & enjoy the silence. Silence is so rare in my life, I think. Yes, I don't generally want it; as it can make one so uncomfortable, but there is the rare occasion where I do want it.

I like to work by candlelight, generally. Little lighting suits me well, unless I need the overhead lighting. I don't know why, really, but v. little lighting suits me & helps me create better, somehow. I hate harsh, bright lights.

[livejournal.com profile] wordsindreams sent me a lovely package recently! She's managed to convince me to see the film version of Master and Commander, instead of reading the books first, as I would normally do & I'm rather looking forward to it! (though one day, I will read the books, of course. It'd be something of a sin to only see the film!)

I've also been attempting to tidy the tea & time room a bit - it's become a pit, really, hasn't had a real cleaning in ages.

& just as I find my sewing table, I find that I have no space for any more books. Literally, piles & piles of them are on my sewing table, because I've not figured out where to put them!

Perhaps I can use Marwood's carrying case - I don't take her anywhere, & she doesn't leave her table, so perhaps her carrier can hold some books for me.

& I may repost bits of my linkspirals at From Out of the Rain soon, but I would like a bit more content up first. I'm just being shy & reticent about posting anything - I'm always convinced everything I do is simply rubbish.
riverdresses: ([dw] eight ;; infinity made finite)
JESUS CHRIST, M.A.C. HAS ANNOUNCED THAT THEY'RE RELEASING A HELLO KITTY LINE OF MAKEUP THIS FEBRUARY!!!

OMG. & it isn't too expensive! LIPGLASS AISLE, HERE I COME. (my first M.A.C. items will have my favourite kitty on them. WIN!) But WTF WAITING LISTS & ONLY OUT FOR EIGHT WEEKS?! M.A.C., NOOO. (& what is this fuckery about coming out after my birthday?! Eleventh my arse - it should be the seventh, so I can run down there & BUY!)

::shakes [livejournal.com profile] alli_everyday & [livejournal.com profile] laii:: GIRLIES! AMAZING, Y/Y/BUNNEH?

::squeals, flails, dies, regenerates to blow a lot of money on this line::

Okay. So I haven't got one of Tarina Tarantino's strawberry Sweet Lolita Hello Kitty rings yet, but I will. BUT THERE'S A M.A.C. SHOP FOUR BLOCKS FROM WHERE I LIVE. MUST OWN SOMETHING OF THIS LINE!

Speaking of things a-happening in February . . . my twentieth birthday is next week, on Friday. Mother's asked me if I'd like to go see Coraline on my birthday, but I sort of wanted to wait until it was showing at the Red Vic Movie House & go myself. Other than that, I have no idea of what I'm going to do for my birthday weekend.

Mother's birthday is next week, on the third. We're going to dinner, which is a birthday dinner for both of us. I'll have to remember to bring her gift & card with me & give it to her then.

I like birthdays, for the silly things. The fact that everyone's nice to you, they hug you lots, treat you wonderfully & give you gifts & you get to eat & do whatever you want, really. But I don't like them for what they are, really. (but I'll save that for a serious, thinky post that will contain more depressing things.)

& yes, as I said above, Coraline's coming out on February sixth, so GO SEE IT, DAMMIT! Go support Neil Gaiman's lovely book at the pictures! (& it looks quite good - I saw the trailer for it when I saw him live in October & OMG it looks great. So support Neil & go see it.)

In fangirlish & fannish news, I've started listening to The Natural History of Fear again, slowly. I take back what I said about it being dull, it is damn near the most disturbing audio I've heard since the Zagreus/Scherzo arc. Just . . . it is so creepy & confusing & also mind-fogging at the same time. & I think I'm growing to enjoy it a bit more than I did before.

(& GUH, Paul McGann's VOICE IN THAT AUDIO. Whispery, angry, shouting, innocently seductive, pleading . . . I DIE EVERY SINGLE TIME I LISTEN TO A FEW SECONDS OF THIS DAMN THING.)

Also . . . I may have acquired a new fandom. A very tiny, with very little fic sort of fandom, & one I've been all 'OMG SUNDAY. SOME THINGS ARE SACRED, WE DO NOT MAKE THEM INTO FANDOM FOR CHRISSAKES', but I . . . I just couldn't help myself! ::hangs head:: But the fic is considerably good when I find it! So I've not many regrets other than the 'O FUCK SOME THINGS ARE SACRED WE AREN'T SUPPOSED TO MAKE THEM FANNISH.'

So after all of that, I have a mix to make! Maybe two. Or three!

(hmm. Is anything too sacred to make it slashtastic/fannish? Y'know . . . I don't think so, actually!)

& as I write this, I may be, in a way, re-acquiring a fandom, but this one has roots in my childhood, in the obsessive reading I did when I was a little girl. (o, audio plays, you make me so happy!) When I was a little girl, I used to go to the library every Friday after primary school, rain or shine, & I'd take out tons of books, so many I'd need to take a rolling suitcase to hold them in. Among them was occasionally Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories. (my long-standing favourites were The Sign of the Four & The Hound of the Baskervilles, which was really an overall childhood favourite of mine. I still have my copy, even.) & now, I'm listening to the lovely audios of them, which were done by BBC Radio from 1989 to 1998, if I remember properly.

So far? Amazing amazing amazing. ♥♥♥

I suddenly miss those days I'd putter about the library, picking out various sorts of books, all different genres, piling them into my suitcase & trudging home to read them all before next week.

(I read a lot of mystery when I was a girl. & Sherlock Holmes always made me wish I could play the violin. I can't, but I adore violin music nevertheless.)
riverdresses: (ten ;; judge & jury)
I decided today, that what I need, is a dress. A Doctor-esque dress, of course, brown & white pinstriped.

So I sat & thought a bit more on this dress. It couldn't be just any sort of boring dress you'd buy in a shop, like the kind I always see in the high-priced shops in the city. No, this dress would have to be made with lots of things in mind, beyond fabric & inspiration.

First, it would need petticoats. Lots & lots & lots of short, soft & white petticoats; the sort that puff skirts out to twice their real flat sizes. They should be made of the softest, fluffiest, most comfiest of cotton & should be removable, in the event you simply must take them off. The dress would also need little pockets, iPod-sized, with a button to close it on the skirt. (I detest things with no pockets!! Where are my hands supposed to go?)

The top of the dress would be an entirely different affair. None of this neckline-that-isn't-really-a-neckline-at-all-but-a-flimsy-excuse-to-just-barely-cover-a-girl's-boobs, thankyouverymuch, but a nice, scoop-ish sort of neckline, or even better, that sort of neckline with little puffed cap sleeves! (though that could make the dress a bit childish looking, but I think it could be properly pulled off if the neck's done right.) This sort of dress just won't work with straps of any width; it would look silly & rather disregarding of its own inspiration.

The skirt's length is a bit tricky though. I suppose knee-length or maybe an inch above the knee would be fine & one wouldn't have to worry about bending over in the dress, what with all of that froth hiding your bloomers (or dare I suggest, the lack of them?) properly. Any longer, the dress wouldn't work at all, any shorter & it would just spit on the original idea of the dress.

It would of course zip up in the back. But what sort of zipper would it have? A big, rather obvious one, or one of those silly delicate ones that rip from the dress's top when you tug it all together? Pulling it over your head just doesn't seem very elegant, at least to me.

& of course, accessories. A great big matching hairbow, because really, what is such a lovely dress without a hairbow? (though I never wear them - not pretty enough for one!)

Maybe white kneesocks? (with that dress? Adorable, I say!!) & of course, because really, this wouldn't be too much fun without them - white Converse. Or maybe black. Or, if one would prefer, big four inch platform Alice in Wonderland shoes. Maybe rocking horse ballerinas, but the straps would have to be worn very low on your legs. Otherwise it would just look silly.

(of course, the blue & white version would look damn fantastic too, but it would need a bit of lace somewhere on it. Not a lot, not an overpowering amount, maybe just around the sleeves. Of course, you'd only be able to wear white kneesocks with it, I think, & maroon Converse or the black platforms. But it would be just as nice a dress as the first!)

yes, I know. I think too damn much. ::hides::

(& I think most of the above came from rereading this post & from one that [livejournal.com profile] soundthedrums made last night, I do believe.)

☄ ☄ ☄ ☄ ☄ ☄ ☄ ☄ ☄ ☄

☁ ☁ ☁ Another reason (among many) for me to one day escape to England: Vivienne Westwood. Even if I never got to buy anything, to just touch all of that beauty, & maybe . . . a pair of rocking horse ballerinas wait for me over there? Original rocking horse ballerinas? Maybe? Possibly?

My name was Vivienne once. Of course, I was young at the time, so I picked it because it was exotic & prettily spelled, but sigh, it was a lovely name.

(how long can a name reasonably be, anyway?)

☁ ☁ ☁ It is an odd bit of news to admit - I used to smoke a bit, when I was a sillier, less (if ever!) grounded teenager. Not a lot & not constantly, mind you, but I did it. I stopped after my aunt passed on from lung cancer two years ago, but o, I rather miss it now. Yes, I know it's an awful habit & frankly, not that attractive, but I quite miss it nonetheless. I suppose that it doesn't help that anytime I work out of doors, ninety people are sitting next to me smoking away & blowing.it.in.my.face.the.fucking.assholes. At least I don't do that to people when I do it!

(I'm such a poisonous girlthing sometimes.)

☁ ☁ ☁ Does anyone care to offer an explanation as to why I'm not only a) reading a fair bit of Master/Martha ficcage lately but b) downloading mixes for them? WHAT AM I DOING TO MYSELF I DON'T KNOW. More to the point, when did I start liking anything that wasn't Gwen/Martha? (yes, I have an odd fondness for Gwen/Martha. Nope, can't explain this one either.) Hell, I don't even LIKE to ship Martha with anyone that isn't Rose or Gwen, okaaaay. AT ALL! Martha's awesome on her own!

Hmm. O, well, whatcanyahdo? ::laughs::

(& the mix in question is here & HOW HOT IS MARTHA, JUST WANT TO SAY. Why I'm STILL not writing the Ten/Martha clubbing!porn of HOT is beyond me. O, wait, it's 'cause I'm so shy about things like writing. OKAY, DONE THERE.)

O!

(a not-secret for you lovebugs?)

This entry would have been ever so slightly gloomy&doomy-toned, just a little, but really, Betsy-shaped gloom is so two weeks ago, isn't it? Instead, let's have a bit of fun! & some pink hearts simply because I'm in the mood for pink things.

♥♥♥ I finished Secret Diary of A Call Girl last night!! O, Billie Piper! HOT & TALENTED & SO.VERY.UNDERDRESSED.WHEEEEE. I MUST picspam for all of you soon! & also, there was so much Amy Winehouse played! SQUEE!

♥♥♥ Am plugging away at uploading all of the music for all of the mixes you peaches asked for! Uploading music - so tedious! But since I DO do it out of doors, perhaps I shall partake in more people watching.

♥♥♥ I discovered today, whilst cleaning our my clothes chest, that I have finally reached my goal of owning more skirts & dresses than pants! I've two pairs of pants & at least five skirts & seven or more dresses. Yay, finally! (now I just to stop wearing those pants all the time & spend the rest of the time in skirts & dresses!)

♥♥♥ Miss Penelope of Cocoa continues to be the newest source of inspiration in Betsyland. Look for yourself!
