riverdresses: (≈ new wave specs appeal)

Eye exam tomorrow morning at nine-thirty. Grrrr. Definitely not looking forward to sporting my Tenth Doctor/Clark Kent specs or lacking my Edie Sedgwick-esque eye makeup. But I need an eye exam & more contacts quite badly, so sacrifices must be made, alas.

Damn, why don't I ever buy waterproof eye makeup? Waterproof eye makeup & defogger for my specs.

Screencapping continues to be a pain in my arse & there's a good chance that I'm just going to have to do it manually - screencapping is always nice, but doing it manually in VLC is such a drag - tedious, tiring & frustrating. But my caps just . . . vanish if I try to do it automatically, so if I want caps, I'll just have to do it all by hand. Ah, well. I've got some pretty subject matter to work with, so maybe it'll be less of a chore! It'll just take longer to get it all done.

& in less wah-wah-wah, I went skipping off to [livejournal.com profile] fanmix in search of Zod/Tess mixes & whilst I came up empty-handed (booo!) for them, I found - & yes, I'm shocked that I'm even going with this; but crack is fun - a really nice Zod/Lois mix! (Again, my shock is almost immeasurable, but Pandora is wicked shippy if you liked those two. & the phone fakeouts & Salvation up until the phonebooth scene are also pretty shippy. I'd . . . read it? & okay, maybe ship it. But I'm too busy scheming on how to promote moar Zod/Tess to think of them.)

I also forced myself to sit through watched Superman II last weekend. It was . . . well, not my thing, but it was nice. & I thought the fortress of solitude looked really Gallifreyan in design, which amused me during all the dull bits, i.e., the non-Zod or Clark bits.

& you know, the weirdest thing? I came out slightly hearteyes for Clark Kent. But then again, I've never been overly fond of Superman - he bores me, actually, & I was a Batman girl as a child. But Clark? Awww! He gets me right in my heart because of that sweet awkwardness he has. I like cutely awkward sorts!

Hmm. I remember once talking with [livejournal.com profile] nentari about how Sarah Jane Smith, in her early serials with Three, was very Lois Lane-esque herself, even in her wardrobe & overall look. I definitely saw that in the film & I sort of see it in Smallville!Lois too, even though I don't think she & Sarah are as much alike there. I think Smalliville!Lois is maybe a bit more Martha Jones-esque (especially in Pandora!) than Sarah-esque, but they're still a fair bit alike. But, hey, I loved Martha too, so it's a win-win situation all around.

& I'm pretty sure all of that preamble was just so I could mention how the Genesis song Me and Sarah Jane made me think of Clark & Lois without everyone thinking I'd lost my mind. (well, it sort of does! I think you just have to use your imagination to make it fit a bit.)

I went back to using my Twitter today at [livejournal.com profile] wordsindreams' enabling suggestion, since she's using hers more lately. I'm riverdresses there as well, should you want to follow me! (I update way too much there; you've been warned)

Hmm. Sort of want to practise my eye makeup now in lieu of of being able to wear any tomorrow - I know some of it will stay on & make it look like I have some on, so I'd have more of a Nico-esque, rather than Edie-esque look.

Also, LJ fucked around with the tags again, & made it so that any tag with a slash is basically a broken link, so I have to start reorganising my tags soon. GAH, WHAT THE FUCK WAS WRONG WITH THE OLD SYSTEM, REALLY.

Edit: AAAAH OMG, THE MAKER OF SAID MIX MADE A BUNCH OF BEAUTIFUL ZOD & ZOD/LOIS ICONS FUCK YES! ::DANCES:: (It's been a bitch to find good, gorgeous, awesome Zod-centric icons. I DO NOT APPROVE. ::hisses:: brb, swiping & uploading all of them.)

Edit II: I forgot to add above, that after a little thinkythink (& seeing the Zod/Lois icons I flailed about above), I've come to the conclusion that Zod/Lois = Simm!Master/Martha, but somehow, not as squick-inducing for me. (I can read Simm!Master/Martha, but it kind of makes me uncomfortable & I've never figured out why.) Zod/Lois, on the other hand is just hot & twisted, & not like Zod/Tess - that's just evil & hot. So I could feasibly enjoy them more than I ever could Simm!Master/Martha. Go figure.

Alas, I haven't found it on YouTube yet. (Housewifey? Never - Bernadette is a bloody diva, she doesn't do housewife stuff. Basically, in case you want to know a bit more about the movie, Bernadette is a recently widowed transsexual who tries to forget the sorrow of losing her husband by going on a road trip with two drag queen friends through the Australian outback in a rickety old bus called Priscilla. Here's Bernadette with her two friends - and yes, those are Guy Pearce and Hugo Weaving. :P)

Yeah, at least the two of us would have.
That has happened to me in the past.

I like hippy stuff, myself. *shrugs*

Perry dating Martha Kent? You mean something happened to Jonathan? But... but... I like Smallville's Jonathan Kent! I used to have a huge crush on the actor when I was a wee kidlet!

(Ooh yes, that helps a lot. And don't worry about the spoilery stuff - the clips I have are very Tess-heavy, remember?)

* Miuchi is a bit heavy, but I love holding her in my hand when I'm just lying back watching TV.
* But tea is not fattening, is it?
* I love it that Zoe has her trademark chipmunk smile in that pic. I love her smile but nobody ever shows it in fanart.
* Yes, I know that. I don't regret sending them feedback - it's just that I talked and talked, and my e-mail became way bigger than I had planned and filled with blabbery stuff that probably shouldn't have been shared. I'll post it to you, if you want it (and I might post it in my journal if they read it in the podcast), but be warned that it will break the comment box. As we always do. :P
* It is, yes. :D

BOO. :O Maybe I should go pay my library fines & find it in DVD-quality . . . OOOOO! I like the sound of Bernadette - she sounds fab! (& the whole plot reminds me of a lovely movie I saw when I was an art student, To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar. I loved that, so I have a feeling I'd actually really like Priscilla, Queen of the Jungle! I'd definitely like to see it. & ACK! I see no dress-wearing!Zod in your link! D:)

Then we would have probably broken a thousand comments with our glee. :P
Isn't it weird when that happens?

I'm odd & never have, actually - I guess I'm too high glamour for the hippie look. ::giggles::

Um . . . well . . . you find out sort of what happens in series nine, but I'm not about to spoil you any further! (Unless you really wanted me to, of course . . . )

(WASN'T THAT FABULOUS TO SEE? & YAY! Then . . . might I ask you what you think of Tess so far? She came out as my second favourite in series nine & not just because she was so close to Zod. She's the kind of woman they coined the acronym HBIC for - & she lives up to it! :D I LOVE TESS, OMG.)

* ♥♥♥

* & I don't think so, but some tea might have calories!

* ::pets Zoe:: I love her smile - makes me go AWW!

* I think the more personal, the more rewarding such feedback can be. It shows that you really connected to such fab work. :)

* YAY!

I recorded the first movie to a DVD but because of the differences in region in our countries I can't make you a copy. :( And it's been years since I last watched Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (yes, it's desert and not jungle :P), but I remember Bernadette being pretty awesome. I posted the picture in my own account here, if it helps - Bernadette is the one in white.
And if you want another movie rec featuring Terence Stamp, back in the sixties a movie about a female version of James Bond called Modesty Blaise was made. I grew up reading her comics, so I was curious about the movie, and I quite liked it as she was very glamourous and a bit on the mod side - but the best part was that a very young and boyish looking Terence Stamp played her plucky sidekick Willie, and they looked like this. (He also looked like this if you want to enjoy a bit of eyecandy!Terence.)

Yes indeedy.
That's how our brains work, I guess.

I've always liked the hippie look. Low maintenance, I guess.

I'm scared...

(YES! I rather liked Tess. She was a nice surprise, since she's not in the comics - she's probably the only Smallville-only character, though I don't remember Chloe from the comics either. I like it that she's able to hold her own with Zod, and that she's able to carry on with the Luthor legacy on her own.)

*
* But less than any juice or soda, I reckon.
* Me too. :)

Let me show you it, then:

Dear Tony, Jo! and Bob,

Greetings from Portugal! I discovered your podcast after hearing Jo at the Goodies Podcast, decided to listen to a few episodes, and pretty soon I was hooked. I'm allowed to listen to my trusty mp3 player at work, thank heavens, as it helps me stave off boredom and retain my sanity (if you knew my co-workers, you'd understand), and since September was a rather tough month the Flashing Blade was a lot of help - so thank you!

Anyway, Tony has asked people to share their first memories of Doctor Who. I was already in my early twenties when I discovered it; as far as I know the classic series never aired in Portugal, although I recently went to a library and discovered a few novelizations that were published in 1983.
In the late '90s, my family finally got cable television, and I began watching BBC Prime. One day, I switched on the TV, and I saw a girl running down a corridor accompanied by a robot dog. I would later learn that those were the second Romana and K9, but at the time I had no idea of what was going on, or what it was that I was watching. For the next few months, this situation would be repeated: I'd switch channels, and find it was halfway through an episode. Then one day, the scene I spotted featured two girls I didn't know talking to a blond guy and calling him "Doctor", which made me stop and go "hang on, what's going on?" Once they mentioned something about the regeneration failing (as this was from Castrovalva) I put two and two together. Although intrigued, it took me months to find Doctor Who again, but eventually I managed not only to watch a complete episode from start to finish, but to watch a complete serial: Arc of Infinity. As you can imagine, the plot confused me immensely, as it required knowledge of the show's history, and said knowledge was something I was seriously lacking. However, rather than giving up watching, I decided to check the internet and do some research on the backstory of Doctor Who up to that point. It helped that, at the time, I was completely obsessed with the Goodies and had just watched an episode featuring Jon Pertwee as a mad Welsh vicar in a Snape wig. After learning that Pertwee had played the Doctor, I decided that it was worth to investigate further on, as I was very curious to know how that screechy-voiced madman could have ever played the Doctor.

::WAILS:: DAMN IT ALL! (I have a weird feeling I had a dream about the first movie last night, but I don't really remember . . . o, blah. :P Desert, jungle, both are hot & sweaty places!) & oooo, she's stylish in a traditional traveller's way, though her friends have . . . interesting looks too. :D & ZOMG, I ACTUALLY ALMOST WATCHED Modesty Blaise ONCE! But I'm not sure if I knew he was in it. But either way, I SHOULD have seen it, since I thought I'd like it then, & now I know I WILL like it when I do! (OMG. YUMMY. He would have made a nice Clark Kent in those days, I think. ^-^)

& IT WOULD HAVE BEEN FUN.
Hmm!

Heeee - I've always liked looking supremely glamorous, even as a wee Betsyshape!

I cannae tell you . . . you has to see it! & of course, unless you really loved Tess & Chloe, you'd never have to watch another series!

(TESS IS BADASS, OMG. & wait a moment - Chloe's actually comicverse herself? I don't know about Tess & I don't think so, but IS Chloe original DC-verse? She's very much like Oracle - she mostly stays at Watchtower & oversees the technical aspects of things for Clark & Oliver [yes, we also have Green Arrow in Smallville - I have no idea how I feel about him. CONFUSED!]. Hmm. I think I need to look into this, since I loved Chloe almost as much as I love Tess - she's their Tosh! & YES, Tess remains kickass with Zod - she's not afraid to lie to him or, on occasion, get into a physical disagreement with him. & in the series finale, among other things, she causes him injury! :D & also, I think she owns part of, or was the editor-in-chief of the Daily Planet in series eight - it gets messier in series nine.

& after all of this, I'm going to overhaul my Tess icons . . . needs moar Tess!)

* ::glomps::

* Well, yes, probably. Hmm.

* Now I keep thinking of Zoe as a chipmunk. :P YAY! She likes shiny things, so do chipmunks.

& darling, I just love your letter! I don't think it's full of babble at all - I loved reading it & found it very interesting! & since they asked for their listeners to share their memories, of COURSE e-mails will get long & involved - I hate when people offer up lame, one or two sentence answers to things - it makes me feel like they don't really care enough about the question to really put much thought into their answer. I hope they read it on-air (or at least some of it!), sweetie!

YEAH. :( (Really? They are, yes - but desert makes more sense considering this is set in Australia!) Her two friends are drag queens and were dressed for work at that point, while Bernadette had long retired (since her sex change operation and subsequent marriage, I think) and was just visiting backstage at that point, and therefore had no need to be all dressed-up in that scene. I remember she got in full drag gear later on, though. You should watch Modesty Blaise if you can - it has the typical style of European 1960s movies, which some people find unpalatable, but which I think you'll enjoy. Plus, Modesty is a glamour kitten; in the comics she's a dark-haired Astrid Ferrier, from the hairstyle to the catsuit, but because the actress playing her, Monica Vitti, was a blonde, they made her trademark haistyle a wig she only wears in a few scenes. (Yes, Terence was a sexy beast. Still is, actually. :D)

One bit of trivia related to the first Superman movie you might find interesting/funny. Some time ago, I was rereading the 1970s journals of Monty Python member Michael Palin, who at some point became a board member of Shepperton Studios, where the movie first began filming before they decided to move to a bigger studio. In an entry dated May 6, 1978 (22 days before I was born!), Mike met Margot Kidder (movie!Lois), and wrote the following in his diary:
The length and design of Superman's cock was the subject of much controversy, which culminated in Superman appearing at a photo session with a large metal dong down his tights. Margot said she got so fed up with this thing digging into her leg that she took to flicking it with her fingernail, causing a light but noticeable metallic ting every time she touched his shorts.

YES!
I'm not saying it's a bad thing, mind. It allows us to rediscover information and manage to re-experience the feeling of surprise.

I always liked the "woodland nymph" style so many hippie chicks seemed to have - maybe I felt it made them look like fairies and wanted to be one myself?

Okay, I'm intrigued.

(SHE IS! Well, Chloe was created exclusively for Smallville because the powers that be wanted a Lois-like character but decided it wouldn't make much sense for Lois to be around since in the comics she only met Clark when they were already adults - which is now funny because eventually they did introduce Lois to the show. Her relationship with Jimmy Olsen means she's now somewhat being the Smallville equivalent of Lois' sister Lucy, who is Jimmy's girlfriend in the comics. HOWEVER, Wikipedia says that Chloe will make her debut in the comics this November, her background altered slightly so that readers unfamiliar with the show will not think of her as a mix between the roles Lois (the reporter) and Lana (Clark's old friend from back home) have in the comics. Oracle is actually from the Batman comics - she used to be Batgirl, until the Joker shot her in the spine and she became confined to a wheelchair. I'm yet to see how Smallville!Oliver is like; I've always thought of him as being British and with a Kenneth Branagh-sort of looks and manners (plus he had Dinah - is she still around in the show?). Your smiley makes you sound so happy that Tess hurt Zod. :P)

* *snuggles*
* That's why Celestial Seasonings' sales pitch regarding their candy-flavoured teas is that people can appreciate the flavour without their waistlines suffering the consequences. :P
* Well, chipmunks are adorable, and so is she.

Thanks for the reassurance. But you know me - I'm very insecure and will be worrying about it until I actually listen to their reaction when they do read it (and they'll very likely read the whole thing - sometimes their feedback section is the longest part of the podcast).

::IZPOUTYFACED:: (Yup! & okay, point taken. ;D) I DID wonder what would drive one to create a dress made of flip-flops, but that explains it. & oooo, Modesty Blaise sounds fab & super sixties! I want to see, yes indeed! ::dances:: (RAWR! AGREED. & he is? ::beams::)

& OMG WHUT. XD ::IZDED:: Well, that might actually lend a more . . . interesting dimension to the first movie when I see it. ::mad cackles:: I guess the size of one's wang IS of some important if you're getting into the Superman suit! ::thoughtful!girlie!face::

SO MUCH FUN!
That is true! & therefore, is probably a good thing when it happens. ::nods::

I like a pretty faery look myself, when I don't feel like being very glamourou, but I like it in riverdresses (it's a word all its own!) & bare feet, mostly.

THEN I'M SLOWLY DOING MY JOB RIGHT. I HOPE.

(SHE'S COLD-BLOODED, BUT SHE HAS A HEART AT THE SAME TIME. SHE JUST HIDES IT VERY WELL. OH! O, yes, now I think I get the origins of Chloe better - interestingly enough, I believe Lucy IS featured in Smallville at some point, while Chloe is Lois' cousin & they also share a flat together. & I think EVERYONE knows that Lana was in Smallville, but was kind of a total trainwreck, from my understanding. (Either way, I'm not interested in her & won't be seeing any of her episodes.) My main contact with Oracle is from the Birds of Prey series & I adored her so much there. I really do see a lot of her in Chloe; almost as much as I see a lot of Tosh in her.
& weeeeeeeell, I'll tell you a bit about him, BUT. I'll tell you now that I kind of don't really like him & I think he's a wanker. ANYWAY! Oliver in Smallville still is very wealthy & the head of Queen Industries, but he's been described in the most recent episode as a depraved playboy & when we see him at the start of series nine I THINK he went a touch rogue after possibly killing Lex Luthor & he is a mess. Drugs, drinking binges, total death wish, failing to keep Lois safe after Clark entrusted her to his care (he only had to keep her awake to keep her from turning into a zombie) & letting his company go to hell (& Tess, who's his business partner & was, apparently, his lover at one point dragged him back from some awful Mexican dive bar). . . yeah. It's ugly & it really didn't make me like him whatsoever. Even after he straightened out (thanks to some desperate measures from Chloe!) & became Green Arrow again, I still didn't really care for him.
However, he did one thing that really touched me - he took this girl in off the streets & started training her after he saw her in a kind of cage fight thing & then he saved her life after his former mentor kidnapped her to get to him & force Oliver to kill him. & later in the series, he & Chloe begin dating & while I kind of hate him, I know Chloe really loves him & so, I respect her judgement. But I still think he's a wanker.
(& hee, if Dinah is Black Canary, well, possibly! She's shown up sometime before & in Salvation, Chloe was apparently looking through e-mails & Oliver's were among them & he says to her after he realises she's reading it, 'Um, Chloe, those e-mails between me and Canary were strictly platonic.'

& because you know I love providing visuals, here's some Queen Industries!Oliver after he thought he was going to get blown up by Metropolis' low-rent version of the Celestial Toymaker, some Green Arrow!Oliver getting his ass handed to him by Hawkman (I LOVE THIS SCENE SO HARD, OMG.) & finally, because I'm equal opportunity & not blind, Shirtless!Oliver in his office, talking to Tess, who's in the chair & really, the only thing worth looking at in this cap. :P.
I WISH your vision of Oliver is what we'd have got. & well . . . I might be. ;D)

* ::mews::

* CANDY-FLAVOURED TEA FTW.

* YES INDEED!

::snugglies:: Deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep breaths, bb! Deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep breaths.

*IZTHESAME* I think there are some outfits in that movie that are even more outrageous than the flip-flops one (and be honest, the last things you've ever expected was to see Hugo Weaving dressed like that, right?). It is very sixties, yeah, in all its epic grooviness. (He is, yes! I don't know if you've seen the post from my "30 days of Who" meme dedicated to the actors I'd love to see playing the Doctor, but one of my suggestions was Terence, and I made this macro of him as Twelve. Rawr indeed.)

Well, Mike stated that the false dong was only used in a photoshoot, so we can expect that the bulge we see in the movie is the real thing. It does lead to some interesting thoughts while watching it, that's for certain. :P

YES!
I like to think so, yeah.

Lots of hippie chicks dressed like that - but most of them preferred to dress like Jo Grant, or with some pieces taken from Sarah Jane's earlier days (like the outfit with the head-scarf from Robot).
Ooh, on an interesting note, I'm now going through the oldest episodes of the Staggering Stories podcast - that's the 'cast Tony Gallichan was a part of before moving for the Flashing Blade. Some of the Staggering Stories episodes feature "death matches" between fictional characters, and the latest episode I've listened to (the first one after Tony's departure) had Lois Lane fighting Sarah Jane Smith. (Sarah won.)

I have the feeling you are, yes. I'm still intrigued.

(THAT'S THE FEELING I GOT. Lana was really good in the comics, but I have to agree that what I've seen of her in the odd episode I watched her Smallville version was a wreck. In the comics, Oracle is Barbara Gordon - Commissary Gordon's daughter, a librarian who became Batgirl completely by accident. After she was confined to a wheelchair, she became Oracle as a way to continue to fight crime in spite of her limitations.
Oh dear. Yes, that's definitely not the Oliver Queen I know and love - he sounds much more like his sidekick in the comics, if I'm honest. MY Oliver looks more like this, and I cannot picture him being younger than 40; Kenneth Branagh would be my ideal casting choice for him, or perhaps Cary Elwes now that he's older. And yes, Dinah is Black Canary. They were one of those long-lasting, happily-married couples while I was growing up, though I have the feeling soap-like storylines probably ruined that after I stopped reading the comics.)

Whoa. Yes, the man is gorgeous but... well, not MY Oliver, I'm afraid. *is a Brannagh fangirl*

* *pets*
* I bought some more chocolate tea today. *beams*

I'm okay, I promise. I'm still mulling over whether I was too boring, but I'm okay. *deep breaths*

::WIBBLES NEXT TO YOU:: There ARE? ::giggles:: But the flip-flops frock was insane! (& yes indeed!) DUDE, YES! ::DANCES:: (& I DID, actually, & I was all ':D YAY!' when I saw it! I must agree with you - still quite handsome!)

. . . I'm sorry, I still find this all too funny. ::gigglesnorts:: It sort of makes you want to go back & look at every Superman promo shot ever done, in a way. ::is still giggling:: I'm such a child, sorry. :P

I suddenly find myself tempted to shout 'MOAR JOR-EL!', but . . . I'll refrain for now. Besides, it SHOULD be 'MOAR ZOD!'
I'll keep that in mind. :D

I love Sarah's outfit with her headscarf; it's so pretty! & Lis is right when she says it's v. Zelda Fitzgerald. :D
HEY WHUT SARAH > LOIS?! DUDE, NO! I think . . . ::looks confused:: Was there any talk of how Zod would wipe the floor with the Master? :D

GOODY! ::is happy with herself::

(SHE'S AMAZING. GO SEE HER IN ACTION! Wait, Lana isn't MEANT to be a trainwreck? I don't think I saw that coming. ;P I was always very fond of Batgirl, but I think that Oracle is my favourite between the two.
Did I also mention that Smallville!Oliver has slept with every major female character in the current series? He's slept with Lois [& was her boyfriend & STILL has feelings for her, apparently], Tess & now Chloe, which is part of why I can't stand him. [Besides, I very rarely like rich playboy types.] & he has a sidekick in the comics? Oooo! & hmm - well, he's a bit older & a bit less attractive, but I don't mind! At least I might care about him in this incarnation, as opposed to kind of hating him as I do now. :D & OMFG YES KENNETH BRANAGH AS GREEN ARROW! He'd be fab with a bow & he'd be so delightfully broody . . . MASSIVE APPROVAL HERE! & they get married? AWW! That sounds so sweet! Alas, I don't know what happens with them in Smallville, but knowing Oliver there, they might have just had a fling. But secretly, I hope she beat him up. :D
O, & you know, he met Zod in Salvation, I think. & as much as I want to tell you how that went . . . spoilers! ::zipped lip::

I prefer your Oliver. A LOT. ::beams:: I just can't really fall after Smallville!Oliver ninety-nine point nine percent of the time. O well! :D

::snugs you:: That's the spirit!

*POUTYPOUT* Well, the whole wardrobe in that movie was insane - I remember when the costume designer went to receive her Oscar for this, she was wearing a dress entirely made of credit cards. By a huge coincidence, I was reading this month's issue of SFX, and they had a review of Modesty Blaise, as it will be released in DVD in the UK soon - alas, they hated it, for the reasons I've stated earlier (very confusing plot in the style of most 1960s European movies, and Monica Vitti not looking like comics!Modesty at all). (He'd also made a great Master, but that would have been a more obvious piece of casting.)

It does, yes! *giggles*

Shout away, by all means - it's your journal. :P

That makes sense. I know we've discussed To Sir, With Love in the past, but I don't know if you actually got to see that movie, but there's a scene in which Sidney Poitier tells his students that the fashion of their time (1966) actually came from the 1920s - so a link between Sarah looking like the height of 1974 fashion and Zelda Fitzgerald is very doable.
It's not a matter of which one is better, you know - one of the Staggering Stories folk role-played as Lois while another was Sarah, and the last one standing after they simulated attacks and played dirty tricks on each other would be the winner. No Master or Zod yet (the episodes I'm listening to are still from 2008), though the last one I've listened ended up in a tie between Adric and Luke Skywalker.

I'm even more intrigued now that I've read the latest SFX, as there's an article on the upcoming seasons of several shows, and the bit on Smallville's tenth (and final) season has photos of Clark and Jonathan together.

(I'VE SEEN HER IN THOSE CLIPS, PWNING ZOD. No, she's not - and she's actually a redhead. Have some examples of comics!Lana here and here (and yes, those are REAL covers and not photoshopped fanart!). I grew up with Batgirl rather than Oracle, so she has a special place in my heart; it makes sense that this is so, after all - bespectacled red-haired librarian by day, Batgirl by night. :D
Goodness, what a manslut! Yes, he has a sidekick called Speedy! Actually, there are two Speedys. The first one, Roy Harper, is the one I was comparing to Smallville!Oliver, in the fact that he was spoiled by all the money he grew up with thanks to Oliver, and the fact that he slept with anything female that came before him (apart from his teammates in the Teen Titans, who were only friends). He eventually became a drug addict, had a daughter with a supervillain he met in his drug days, and eventually became Red Arrow. The new Speedy is a girl called Mia, who is HIV-positive, and whom I suspect is the protegé you've said Oliver has in Smallville. Oliver and Dinah have always been a couple ever since I've known them, but I don't remember if they really are married or if they're just living together; either way, it's a long-lasting relationship.

I prefer my Oliver too. *grins* Hmm, shirtless!Branagh...

* *cuddlecuddle*

* The Aztec Spice one. Alas, I haven't seen the chai version from Celestial Seasonings in stores for nearly a year now, but I have hope.

I might write something to their spin-off podcast, Professor Dave's Ark in Space, just to make Professor Dave say "Hello, Patricia" in his Sex God voice. *naughty grin* I just need to find a subject to write them about. (Did I send you any episode of that podcast?)

::IZ A SAD KITTY:: HEE! I read a book once when I was nine-ish, that involved the main characters who made clothes for a fashion show out of floppy disks & expired gold cards. I think they even had one made of CDs, which I always wanted to have for myself. :D ZOMG! ::HANDCLAPPY:: I HOPE SOMEONE WILL MAKE IT ALL UPLOADY THEN SO'S I CAN GETS IT. (Well, it might have been, but he would have been badass at it! :D & think of all the DC-verse/Who crossovers I could have made & got away with. XD)

I would suggest that one of us goes back to that huge Smallville picspam that had the subsection of EVERY Clark & Lois EVER in it. Then we'd have a good giggle. :P

But it wouldn't be ladylike!

I haven't YET, but I do remember you telling me of that! I ♥ things from the twenties.
Good then! ::points to icon & cuddles Lois:: & LOLZWHUT A TIE BETWEEN ADRIC & LUKE SKYWALKER. DO APPROVE.

::grins:: Cannae tell you anything . . . ::whistles:: But SEE? You COULD watch the first episode of series ten, then watch series nine so everything makes sense . . . (& because I was all 'OMG YAY!' over it, Kara appeared in the last episode!! While I think she looked too much like a Swedish supermodel, I loved Kara. :D :D)

(TESS DOES THAT MULTIPLE TIMES & IN MULTIPLE WAYS. SHE OOZES BADASSERY LIKE WHOA. ::DANCES:: BUT YOU NEED A FULL EP, BUNNY! You know, I DID see an animated version of Lana once. She was a fashion designer & knew Clark was Superman & wasn't fazed at all about letting him know. I thought she was okay then!
& that second cover in the first link calls for a LOLWHAT, THEY STOLE THE WAY ZOD GOT HIS POWERS BACK IN SMALLVILLE FROM THAT STORY! ::DIES:: HOW MANY TIMES DID HE GIVE BLOOD & MAKE MORE SUPERPOWERED PEOPLE?! XD & dude, Super!Lois' first green outfit is so pretty . . . not digging Lana's, though. & the second one is cracking me up as well, particularly Clark being drawn as all young & sweet with a little!Lana. XD (Also, I MAY have read 'Super-Lois' as 'Super-Zod'. Dun ask. :P) I actually did as well, but Oracle's surrounded by computers & tech! I likey! ^_^
Oliver is a whore in the EXTREME - in addition to them, there are all of those rich & pretty ladies without superpowers or evilness who roll in & out of his bed! Lois mentioned a Danish supermodel once . . . & YES, Speedy sounds a hell of a lot more like Smallville!Oliver - is he an orphan who might have joined a cult once? (Yup, that's moar Oliver!fact right there.) & YES YES, Mia is is protege! I don't know if she's HIV-positive in Smallville, but she was beaten up by her pimp a lot (she was working as a streetwalker the next time Oliver met her) & was coerced into fucking Oliver over a bit at one point, but she seems to have stayed with him & off the streets. (but sadly, she only had two episodes, which IS sad because I really liked Mia & would have liked to see Oliver being a bit more selfless & training her further.) AWWWWWWWWWWWW! I don't know much about Black Canary (but I THINK, even though I don't quite remember, that she might have been featured in Birds of Prey as being the mother of the runaway that Barbara & Helena were looking after.), but yay! She made Oliver happy!

Your Oliver is teh delicious. & Shakespearean! ::heart a-flutter::

* ::mews happily::

* Ooo, tasty! Now go find a Time Lord who will make it for you & thus, marry you. :P

Cheeky missy! ::tickles:: (& I don't think you did, but I'll double check tomorrow!)

*IZ TOO* Those sound like interesting outfits, and remind me of some photos I found in the old magazines my father used to read in the sixties, and which I devoured as a teen when I found them at my grandparents'. I remember one of them showing a micro-dress entirely made of neckties, and another showing a bra made of rubber gloves (a concept later used by Tim in a Goodies episode to support his manboobs :P). One of the issues, by the way, had a photonovel reconstruction of Barbarella. Let's hope so too - either that, or that it will be sold cheaply in the US. (Ooh yes - it would make for an awesome crossover!)

Hmmm...

Can't you make it ladylike?

It was a very stylish era.
The downer of that battle is that they made Adric and Luke fight each other because they dislike them equally. *shakes head*

You're evil, you are! Well, if you're being like that, I just want to add that the reason why, as I mentioned before, I had a crush on Smallville!Jonathan when I was a wee girlie was because he looked like this. And he's still very much on the yummy side, even now that my taste has evolved.
(Well, if I remember correctly, in the old days comics!Kara's secret identity used to be a supermodel, so it would make sense for her to look as such.)

(IN OTHER WORDS, SHE OUT-LEXED LEX. Alas, the Smallville DVDs over here stopped sometime around S4 or S5. Yeah, Lana knew about Clark's secret identity in the comics (or at least the adult Lana did) and was okay with that. And the blood transfusion plot is a very common one - that's how Bruce Banner's cousin became She-Hulk, y'know. And I like it that both Super-Lois and Super-Lana in the catfight cover have the same superhero logo (it's probably a joke regarding the fact that all of Clark's girlfriends had the initials LL - his other famous girlfriend was an Atlantis-born mermaid called Lori Lemaris). Super-Lois = Super-Zod? O_O
Oh my. Definitely not liking this Oliver as much as I do mine. *tickles his goatee* I don't know if Roy ever joined a cult, but he's the sort of fellow who would have easily done such a thing, yes. And yes, comics!Mia was a streetwalker as well before Oliver met her. Actually, Dinah is the runaway from Birds of Prey, as they made her much younger in the show in order to play with the fact that there were two Black Canaries - Dinah Drake, the mother, was the original Black Canary in the old days, and her daughter, Dinah Lance (Oliver's Dinah) took the mantle from the '80s onwards. She was reluctant to follow on her mother's footsteps and wearing the same revealing uniform, but eventually (after wearing a rather ugly jumpsuit for a while) she caved in. And a quick browse at Wikipedia has shown me that their marriage seems to be over because the powers that be want each of them to be the star in a different comic book (they also seem to have ruined a bit of how Ollie used to be and made him a bloodlusting vigilante with at least three biological children from previous relationships). :(

Well, he always was a bit Shakespearean, with a dash or Robin Hood thrown in the mix.
...hey, now I have a mental image of Sam Troughton as a young Green Arrow! :O

* *petpet*

* Why should I need to marry anyone, let alone a Time Lord?

Well, it's funny. Professor Dave likes to make people see/hear him as a grumpy old fart, but he does a really great Sex God voice when he wants to.

BUT WAIT! I DUN NEED TO BE A SAD KITTY - THIS SATURDAY, THERE ARE EXTENDED VERSIONS OF FOUR SUPERMAN MOVIES ON THE TELLY! SO, DO I NEED TO WATCH ANYTHING PAST THE END OF THE FIRST ONE & THE SECOND ONE? I bet they were, & a credit card frock still sounds fab! & I know someone who has a friend who makes things like that! In fact, I think she DID do a skirt out of neckties. (HEE!) & EEEEE, WHAT WAS THAT LIKE? ::bubblies:: YES! ::crosses fingys:: (I know you could get Smallville/Torchwood crossovers fairly easily, but stuff with a TARDIS = more awesome!)

YES, DO IT, YOU WANT TO.

I don't know how! :(

INDEED. :D
Well, I don't like Star Wars AT ALL & I don't like Adric that much, so . . .

Well, I have to keep you spoiler-free until it's deemed proper! WHOA, THAT WAS . . . unexpected! ::giggle:: But you're right, he was still rather handsome when I saw him. :D
(HEE - when I saw her in Smallville, she WAS a model, but she was modelling AS Supergirl - she was apparently on a mission from Jor-El & she needed to get a lot of exposure as soon as she could. Lois, however, didn't think it was a good idea. & I don't think Clark really did either.)

(I HIGHLY DOUBT LEX WOULD HAVE BEEN BADASS ENOUGH TO GET INTO A FISTFIGHT WITH ZOD. THEREFORE, TESS > LEX, AT LEAST FOR ME. :D :D WTF, WHY DID YOU NOT TELL ME SOONER! ::CRIES:: NOW YOU'LL NEVER GET TO SEE THE AWESOME & THE SEXY! ::CRIES:: Yes, when I saw her, she was all grown up & he was actually surprised to see her too. O! O, yes, now I remember - I DID know that, but I forgot . . . but still, I say it's cheating. ;P OMG, why does he attract girls with the same initials?! ::giggly:: Yes . . . ZOD IS DRESSED UP LIKE LOIS TO KILL SUPERMAN, REALLY.
Yesh, Smallville!Oliver is prettyish, but I think I'd like comicverse!Oliver so much more. & whilst perusing Superdickery (dude, you got me totally hooked on that site, THANKS A LOT. :P), I saw a cover featuring Speedy - now I see why he became the Red Arrow. I loved Mia - she needed more episodes! ACK! I KNEW the name Dinah sounded REALLY familiar when it came to Birds of Prey! I can't believe I forgot she was in it. :O (& I'm surprised they made Oliver like that - I would have thought they would have chosen to make him more like Smallville!Oliver, AKA a great big manwhore.)

& ALL of that can be quite sexy! So he's the perfect Green Arrow!
. . . OMFG YESPLZ. :D :D We can has?

* ::meows & jumps up and down on her pink paws::

* Well, think of all the fun you'd have!

::giggly:: I wish someone sexy would say MY name.

YAAAY! WELL, FANS AND CRITICS ALIKE CRITICISE THE 3RD AND 4TH MOVIES A LOT, SO YOU MIGHT WANT TO AVOID THEM; I'M ONLY FAMILIAR WITH THE FIRST TWO BECAUSE HELLO ZOD. Ooh, awesome! Well, the photos were in b/w and in slightly poor quality, but you got the main idea of the story; it's not recommended for spoilerphobes, though. *crosses fingers AND toes* (Yes!)

Do I?

Can't you give it a go?

And so was the next decade, as Daisy Adair is living proof.
Okay, then. :)

Thank you. It was, wasn't it? I used to watch The Dukes of Hazzard when I was a wee tot, and he had that baby face and those curls back then. But, beautiful though he was, I'm glad he aged like a fine wine - a lot of celebrities who were cute at a young age did not evolve that well.
(In the comics, her secret identity was called Linda Lee and she had a brown wig.)

THE LEX IN THE COMICS PERHAPS, AND MAYBE KEVIN SPACEY IN THE MOST RECENT MOVIE; SMALLVILLE!LEX WAS A BIT WET, AND GENE HACKMAN'S LEX WAS A HALF-BRAINED DIMWIT. OOH, AND NOW THAT I THINK ABOUT IT, THE LEGENDARY TIGER MAN'S SONG SHE'S A HELLCAT, WHICH INITIALLY MADE ME THINK OF LEELA, WOULD PROBABLY BE MORE SUITABLE FOR TESS, OR EVEN FOR TESS/ZOD. I KNOW! :( How would the nurse be able to insert the needle in his arm, for instance? At least with Zod they came up with an answer to that. And if you think about it, Kara's secret identity's initials in the comics were also LL - oh dear... CROSS-DRESSING ZOD FTW!
Blame Neil Gaiman - he was the one who got me hooked on that site years ago. :P Yeah, Speedy really likes the colour red, doesn't he? Maybe more episodes with Mia will come in the near future? (Well, the idea that he fathered a bucketload of babies before meeting Dinah seems to imply he is a bit on the manwhorish side, don't you think?)

He is, yes!
My brain likes the idea. SAM FOR TWELVE GREEN ARROW!

* *offers treat*

* Give me my own TARDIS, and I'll have all the fun I'll ever need - namely going back to the dates were burninated episodes of Doctor Who and The Goodies were aired, recording them, and then coming back to the present-day and drop said recordings at the BBC. Oh yes, and going to 1968 and lock myself in a hotel room with Frazer Hines, a feather boa and a jar of chocolate sauce. :P

Well, write a letter to Professor Dave, then, and tell him "I agree with Danielle - your voice is like sex." He'll do the rest, then. :P
(A little explanation of his podcast, then. The idea is to talk about aspects of popular culture - TV shows, movies, music, etc - that people think should be saved in a space ark if the world came to an end and humanity had to flee. Professor Dave is a South-Londoner in his late 40s (though Tony keeps increasing his age to the point that he's over 2000 years by now) who sometimes does audio contributions to the Flashing Blade. He co-presents the Ark in Space with a schoolteacher from Florida who began commenting at the Flashing Blade as "lisaane" before Professor Dave came up with the alias "Lillibet the Wonder Girl" for this project. They occasionally invite other people to talk about some subjects; one such people is Doctor Thomas, whom Professor Dave announced recently will become a regular in the near future with a feature they're keeping a secret for now, while another is a friend of Lillibet called Danielle who is INSANE (and who played an orc in one of the LotR movies) and who made such a sensation when she made her initial guest appearance that she's now become a co-presenter as well, under the codename Squirrel Girl.

YAY, ONLY FOUR HOURS OF SUPERMAN THEN! (O___o) & HEE, HELL ZOD MAKES ME THINK OF A HELLO KITTY VERSION OF ZOD. ::GIGGLES MADLY:: CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT? It WAS quite awesome. :D YAAAAAAY FOR YOUR EARLY EXPOSURE TO BARBARELLA! :D ::crosses her arms & leggies:: (You know, in series eight & nine, or nine, at least, Lois has a secret meeting spot with Clark - only, you know, she doesn't know it's him - which is a PHONEBOOTH. I actually got icons of her standing in it because I thought of Doctor Who. IT COUNTS, HOWEVER FLIMSILY. ::NODS:: & yes, I know the history, but Who associations - more fun, y/n?)

. . . YES. WE NEEDZ THE LAUGHS.

::shakes head sadly::

YES! MAH DAISY! ::twirls her about::
::bows:: & I've TRIED to like it. But I can't! :D

You're welcome! Just . . . tell me when you want to get spoiled & I'll do so. Aww! & yes, agreed, depressingly. ::nodnod::
(SHE DYES HER HAIR BROWN AT THE END OF HER LAST EPISODE! & she wore glasses - Clark didn't even recognise her!)

(REALLY? [I KIND OF WANT TO SEE THE MOST RECENT ONE FOR SOME REASON . . . ] & I HATED LEX IN THE SECOND FILM. I KEPT SAYING IN A VERY ALICE-ESQUE VOICE, 'YOU'RE NOT LEX LUTHOR! YOU HAVE HAIR!' & YES, HE WAS A TWIT. & OF COURSE, I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO INTEREST IN SMALLVILE!LEX WHATSOEVER - YAWWWWWWN. ACCCCK! ::RUNS OFF TO LISTEN:: & YOU KNOW, I ACTUALLY WAS THINKING ABOUT A PEACHES SONG FOR HER. :D ::BRAINTWINZ:: & DUDE, WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO ABOUT THIS? D: True, true . . . & we got Shirtless!Zod out of it, happily! ::dances:: [& also, you really should try & see all of Conspiracy - there are cute Kandorian sisters, Zod being awesome as always, Lois being equally awesome & saving his life & Clark being . . . Clark, really. It's really dark, but it's all worth it for Zod & Lois. :D :D It's one of my favourites, actually.] I noticed . . . WTF IS WITH ALL THE LL-INITIALLED GIRLS IN CLARK'S LIFE?! [Also, his adoptive mum shares the same name as Bruce Wayne's mum, if I remember right.] CROSS-DRESSING!ZOD IS STILL MORE BADASS THAN MOST THINGS! ::NODS::
More reasons to love Neil then! ^__^ & he sure does! But he seems to wear it well. I haven't heard anything about that, but I hope so. I really liked her & Oliver training her actually made me like him a bit. (I SUPPOSE . . . but I'm not used to manwhores having so many kids! Usually . . . they don't? ::giggle::)

INDEED. ::big smiles::
THIS, THIS, THIS! BUT WHO WOULD BE DINAH?

* ::noms it adorably from your hand::

* . . . NO, YOU NEED TO MARRY A TIME LORD.

NO, YOU DO IT. :P I'S TOO SHY! (& what a nifty-sounding podcast!)

Posting in a new comment because if I add this to my previous one LJ will complain about size again:

They read it! My letter was the very last one read (it starts about 1h 01m) and Tony reads the whole thing, taking about 8 minutes to go through it all, and at the end asking Jo if she had fallen asleep because she was so quiet - well, the long time my letter took to read was increased by the fact that he read it while suffering from a serious case of hiccups and jumbling up a few words, as well as stopping to laugh at my description of Jon Pertwee's performance in Wacky Wales, and to rant about how he loved eating fish custard (which left both be and Jo very worried). If you want to download it (and can find the time and place to do it), you can find the page to that particular episode of the podcast here. I'm now considering writing a note for next week's program correcting Tony on a matter regarding a novel (I'll have to be quick, though, as they usually record their programs on Monday/Tuesday) and congratulating him for his guest appearance in this week's episode of the Goodies Podcast, and later on write another letter about this afternoon's experience watching The Androids of Tara with the twins, which will be the subject of their review in two weeks' time (they alternate - one week Tony discusses the TV show with Jo, and the other he discusses Big Finish audios with Bob).

I am SO happy for you, dolly! ::twirls:: OF COURSE I'll download this episode as soon as I next have the chance & eeeeek, this is so exciting! :D :D
& so you picked The Androids of Tara - I'm not so fond of that one myself, but what did the girls think of it?

Yeah, I'm pretty excited too, though I still have the feeling I bored them. *grins* Ooh, and I've already sent them my letter for next week's podcast - let us hope it'll reach them before they record it since, as I've mentioned, they usually do it on Mondays (Tony will spend the rest of the week editing it):

Dear Tony, Jo! and Bob,

Just a small note to ask if you'll be reviewing the Companion Chronicle "Night's Black Agents" when you return to the Sixth Doctor & Jamie audios - and when will you get back to them, since I'm curious to know what you thought of "Legend of the Cybermen".

And if I may, I'd like to make a few suggestions regarding the Companion Chronicles:
• The two Victoria Waterfield audios, "The Great Space Elevator" and "The Emperor of Eternity", the first one being a base-under-siege adventure that would have worked well as part of series 5, and the latter being an interesting historical;
• "The Glorious Revolution", narrated by Jamie, which is a great take on the consequences of changing history;
• "The Stealers from Saiph", featuring the first Romana, which is a good period piece and is made more interesting by the fact that Mary Tamm plays all the characters - the only time this has happened so far in these audios;
• And finally, "The Suffering", a great exercise in storytelling narrated by Vicki and Steven.

All the best,
Patricia

Well, I picked it because the Flashing Blade Gang is doing the Key to Time series in order and that would give me the chance to send them more feedback, and also because the girls love stories with castles and princesses; I would have shown them Planet of Giants instead if it wasn't for that.
Anyway, they loved it; they think Romana I is very pretty, they think Four is mad, they adore K9, and they booed loudly every time Count Grendel was onscreen (Cate also told me she thought his wart was staring at it). Also, they got REALLY scared at the silly monster from episode 1, which I found rather odd since they usually laugh at badly-made monsters and I feel that one fits into the category.
Oh, and I don't know if I'll add this to my letter to the Flashing Blade gang, so I'll let you know now: the girls have nicknames for all the Doctors they have seen so far:
* Two: The Funny Doctor who hangs out with Skirt Boy and the pretty girls
* Four: The Crazy Doctor
* Eight: The Naked Doctor (they've only seen his regeneration so far)
* Nine: The Doctor with the nice smile
* Ten: The Cute Doctor
* Eleven: The Doctor who is mean to bread

::tickles you:: I bet you didn't! If you had, then they probably wouldn't have read it at all. :D

YIPPEE, AUDIOS! ::JUMPS UP & DOWN:: I hope they take some of your suggestions - I'd love to hear about Stealers From Saiph!

Ah, I see - though I noted below that the girls haven't seen anything of One's era . . . ;) But I'm glad they liked it, even though I think it's a bit weak. & YAAAAAAAAAY FOR ROMANA! ::claps hands::
& LOLZWHUUUUUUT THE NAKED DOCTOR! ::FALLS OVER WITH HAPPY GIGGLES:: The girls have aptly named him! APPROVED & JUST WAIT TIL THEY SEE THE TVM. ;D

But Jo fell asleep while Tony was reading it!

YES, AUDIOS! Since the weeks featuring Bob are dedicated to the audios, I felt it was appropriate to ask them that - let's hope my e-mail has reached them before they recorded it so that it retains its appropriateness.

In case you want to see their schedule for their next weeks, here's what I found at their website:
1-69 (the last one) The Stones of Blood
1-70 (next Sunday) The Similarity Engine (Jago & Litefoot audio)
1-71 The Androids of Tara
1-72 Situation Vacant
1-73 The Power Of Kroll

Oh, and I've written my first draft of my Androids of Tara letter. I'll let it simmer until Sunday, in case Tony or Bob reply to my other letter with something that requires an answer from my part (you never know), or in case I feel like adding something else, but the main gist will be this:

Since my young cousins (AKA the terrible twins) have been begging me to show them some more Classic Who, and since your recent reviews have made me want to revisit the Key to Time series, I’ve decided to show them “The Androids of Tara”. Needless to say, they loved it. But then again, it’s a story with doppelgangers, princesses, castles, swordfights, silly hats and K9 - what else could two fairytale-obsessed little girls want?
Also, it was refreshing to re-watch this in their company, as their reactions would sometimes surprise me. For instance, I was expecting them to greet the Taran monster who attacks Romana in episode 1 with laughter, as they did with the Absorbaloff, but instead they screamed so loud that deaf people in China must have caught it, and literally hid behind the sofa in terror. Also, when the Doctor and his friends were trying to enter the throne room in episode 2 while the whole court waited for his arrival, they were biting their nails with the most anxious expression I have ever seen in my life - and when the Doctor was struggling to open the lock, while the other fought, one of them shouted “I can’t take this any more!” They also booed Count Grendel and gave him the thumbs-down every time he appeared onscreen, which I found funny. Cate also claimed Grendel’s wart was staring at her and that it was freaking her out; I’m still trying to work out what to say to something like that.
So, in a nutshell, this serial is yet another one that has the terrible twins’ seal of approval. They loved Tom Baker’s Doctor, they loved Romana, and they now want a K9 of their own.
I’d also like to say that they have come up with a way to describe each of the Doctors they have met so far, and always refer to them in those terms when asking me to show them something Who-related. In order of when they first discovered them:
Christopher Eccleston is the Doctor with the nice smile.
David Tennant is the cute Doctor.
Matt Smith is the Doctor who is mean to bread.
Patrick Troughton is the funny Doctor who hangs out with Skirt Boy and the pretty girls.
Paul McGann, due to them so far only seeing the regeneration scene from the TV Movie, is the Naked Doctor.
And finally, Tom Baker has now been dubbed the Crazy Doctor.

I'm really wanting to show them something of One or Three. Spearhead from Space (or, alternatively, Terror of the Autons) might be one of the next items in my list, as my father was rewatching Rose a couple of days ago and they were all "YAY AUTONS!"
Well, he WAS naked when they saw him, you know... :P

She was probably tired from all of the talking she does! ::glomps::

WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! ::PARTIES:: BUT . . . I HAVEN'T HEARD ANY OF THE AUDIOS PLANNED. D: I HAVE Situation Vacant, but not the Jago&Lightfoot ones (I want to buy those). I can't bring myself to listen to non-Charley audios. :(

& I love the story of how the girls enjoyed Androids of Tara - particularly the bit about Grendel's wart. ::gigglygiggle:: & yaaaaaaay, they want a K9 too! What do you think you'll show them of One? Planet of the Giants?
::gigglesnorts:: Well, that's a good thing! ALL girls should see Paul McGann naked. ;)

Aw, poor Jo. She'd almost deserve a sainthood for putting up with Tony, really.

That's the last of the Jago & Litefoot audios, as they've been reviewing them in order. I'm afraid they've done very little of Charley so far, apart from Storm Warning and the final audios of her with Six (all of them before Bob joined the team, if I remember correctly).

I was all O_O when Cate told me the wart was staring at her. What do you say to something like that? And I didn't include the best part - when I told them The Androids of Tara was made the year I was born, their reply was "Wow, it's really old, then." And yes, I'm pondering showing them Planet of Giants, as I want to show them the original Team TARDIS and the other serials I have of them are either too long or require a lot of background explanation.
But they're only eight!

Aww, why? ::looks curious::

I actually really want to buy their first series, which is weird for me, isn't it? :P But I love Big Finish, so I should try to support them just a little! WHUT! NEEDS MOAR CHARLEY. :O

::giggly:: I . . . honestly have no idea! I probably would have had the face of O_o as well. ::pets her:: LOLZ, do they think you're super old now? :P I hope not! Aww, even just the first episode of An Unearthly Child? They should see a Susan!
YOU KNOW WHAT I SAY TO THAT, BB. ;D

He can be a bit of a meanie at times, particularly to poor Bob. But it's a playful sort of mean rather than an evil one - he's really a softie at heart, who loves a nice cup of tea and who lives with a bunch of kitties - part of the weekly news in the podcast is dedicated to what's been happening to his cats (that part of the news is known as "the mews" :P).

Well, it's Jago & Litefoot, so it makes sense. I mean, I'm yet to watch Talons and yet I loved their CC and have an urge to listen to their series. And yes, more Charley is required.

And that face returned again when Carol announced yesterday that she has a little sprite inside her brain who tells her to do naughty things. I think they always thought I was super old - now they think that serial is as well. :P Planet of Giants has a little more action, hence my idea of showing that to them. But yes, I do want them to meet Susan.
THAT'S NOT HELPING THEM GET RID OF THEIR BRAIN SPRITES, YOU KNOW.

Part 2 of my letter:

As part of my research I ordered some VHS tapes, one from each Doctor prior to the Vegetable Man; I got An Unearthly Child, The Troughton Years and The Pertwee Years, and tried to get Genesis of the Daleks - but I messed up that last order and ended up with Death to the Daleks instead. I have to say I wasn't as disappointed with the story as I'm sure Tony must expect, but I guess that's because I had no expectations and was unaware of Terry Nation's tendency to recycle plotlines. The only thing that made me think "what the hell...?" was the infamous cliff-hanger to episode 3.
Anyway, I was hooked. BBC Prime was airing the show at a rate of two episodes a week, with both being repeated side by side on weekends, and I did not miss a single one ever since. My father would sometimes catch a few minutes of it, and complain that he couldn't understand how I could watch such rubbish. Invariably, he'd conclude his rant with: "You know what's a good sci-fi show? The Tomorrow People!"

So that's how I discovered Doctor Who. A Portuguese cable channel has been airing the new series for the past few years, but so far they've only shown it up to Journey's End. My 8-year-old cousins (identical twin girls) love it almost as much as I do, and because they're mostly only familiar with Eccleston and Tennant I've taken it upon myself to show them stories from the other Doctors. Some time ago I've shown them The Eleventh Hour and The Beast Below, and they absolutely adored Matt Smith; the scene where he's trying all sorts of food is their absolute favourite Who moment, and luckily for us they're yet to request we make them some fish custard. When I decided it was time to show them some Old Who, however, I had to stop and think. What would be the best choice? I considered several options from my DVD collection, and eventually chose The Mind Robber - first, because Patrick Troughton is my favourite Doctor; second, because I felt that the story, with its theme of fantasy and literature, would appeal to them as they love reading and recognize several of the characters from books or cartoon adaptations; and third, because they don't speak English and the BBC DVDs (obviously) don't have Portuguese subtitles, so I have to translate things for them, and if that's the case what better way to endure a session of translation and explanations than with one of my absolutely favourite stories from my absolutely favourite Doctor and companion? And I'm happy to say this was the perfect choice. The idea was to show them only an episode a day, but after episode one was over they started pleading for me to show me the next one; after that one was over they asked to see more, and next thing I knew we had watched all five episodes and they were sad because they were still ready for a few more. They then went outside to play, and after some ten minutes I started to hear them arguing; I went to see what was happening, and I heard the following:
"But I want to be Zoe!"
"No, I'm Zoe and you're the Karkus!"
"But the Karkus is mean and ugly!"
"Yeah. So?"

Aaaand part 3 (told you it was big!), dealing with the serial they'll be reviewing this Sunday, The Stones of Blood:

Anyway, enough of my ramblings. Here are a few disjointed notes on The Stones of Blood:
  • I loved Professor Rumford. Beatrix Lehmann did a great job, and I laughed like crazy every time she and Tom Baker shared a scene; just look at his astonished face whenever she's talking, as it's a thing of beauty. It's no wonder she was Tom Baker's original suggestion to be the next Romana when Mary Tamm announced her departure, as he clearly adored her.

  • De Vries wife/girlfriend/whatever Martha freaks me out a little - not because there's anything wrong about the actress or the actual character but because she looks uncannily like one of my co-workers. The only difference is that said co-worker is blonde and sounds like a contralto version of Nicola Bryant's character in Blackadder's Christmas Carol.

  • I found the first episode's cliff-hanger rather confusing. I know now what is meant to happen and that we never see the Doctor's double because Tom Baker objected to it, but the fact that he's never visible makes the scene confusing and removes some of the threat we are meant to experience.

  • The scene with the two campers is terrifying and feels like something from the Hinchcliffe era. I know some people might see it as padding, but there's nothing wrong with padding when it helps build atmosphere or fits well with the story, and I feel this is a perfect example of this.

  • And that's it. I'll be looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this serial. And now, if you'll excuse me, I have an appointment with the best of both worlds: a nice cup of chocolate tea.

    All the best,
    Patricia
